Yeah, I’m probably in the same boat. Just plain out of my depth. Never owned a cell phone, or used any other Bulletin board. I’ve had a few iPads, but I only do a very few things, emails, SDMB, lots of news, research, photos. I literally know how to manage but a handful of things. I used to be more on top of it. But constant software updates that shift menus around, rename things and actions ground me down, I’m afraid.
The idea that each post breaks down into a side conversation is causing my brain to twitch. It’s not conversation as I understand it, it’s confusing. The infinite scrolling leaves me baffled if I’m responding to who and when? I’ve no idea.
I’ve read the offered tips and directions, (so kind y’all!), but honestly, it’s all Greek to me. I don’t know what you’re talking about in the question and remarkably, even less what the answer is! I literally don’t know what questions to ask, HaHaHa.
I mean, I’m here, I’m giving it a go. But the more I poke around the more confused I am. I’m not gone yet, but I could def see it happening.
All youse peoples getting all frustrated and panicky. You’re trying too hard. You’re all overthinking this.
If you can read threads and posts and respond with posts of your own, then you’ve already learned all you really need to know. Anything more than that, you can pick up in little bits and pieces as the case may arise.
In this very thread, and several of the others, people are asking their questions How you do this? and How you do that? and getting answers. I’ve got all the basics I really need, and I’m learning more details, piecemeal, as I read these threads.
So calm down. Relax. Give it time.
Now, if you were starting a new job and the boss hands you a 250-page user manual written in Egptian Hieroglyphics and tells you to learn all that by Wednesday, then sweat. Yeah, I’ve been there too.
Yay! Not sure why there’s an option to customize something that’s essentially buried, but it’s nice anyway.
Yeah, sometimes that worked for me, but it seemed like every time I typed out a large post, I would get the error message and the post would disappear.
A reminder, or in case there are still people here who haven’t seen it:
(1) If you type ? while viewing posts you get a pop-up screen listing a bunch of basic things you can do and keyboard short-cuts to do those things. Press ESC to close it.
(2) Keep an eye on the two forums “Site Feedback” and ATMB. They are full of threads with people asking all their Discourse questions and people answering them.
(3) In particular, take a look at GreysonCarlisle’s thread, “We’re All Here. Now What? (Basic Tutorial)” which gives a good beginner’s guide (more than a “Basic Tutorial” I think) and begins with a Table of Contents so you can find stuff. I’ve asked TubaDiva to make a sticky out of it. This will be a good thread to bookmark.
I miss seeing how long someone has been a member and their location. As for the mouse-over and “helpful bar on the right” I’m usually either on a tablet or my phone and those features don’t work. Never did on the old board either.
When I clicked on your profile - that is, click your username in the post, then again on your username in the card - your profile shows up with the header image in all its glory. There is no button to collapse it.
When I clicked on my own profile, no image. Took me a while to notice the “expand” button over on the right side of the screen.
Right, but I shouldn’t have to do that. CTRL-F is a Firefox browser function that allows you to search within the page you’re on, without leaving that page. This command shouldn’t be hijacked for a separate, site-only search function. At the very least, I should be able to turn it off.
Edit: And now my quote did not seem to work properly. WTF is up with that?
I think this site hijacks a WHOLE BUNCH of standard browser functions, to provide its own implementations of the same.
For example, Control-UpArrow and Control-DownArrow (or Command-Up and Command-Down on Apples) take you all the way to the top of a page or bottom of a page. This works even here in Discourse, even with long threads that aren’t even all loaded at once. You can see how the Discourse app must hijack the native functions to make that work. There must be many other examples too.
Not at all. I’ve been lurking here since 2003ish. Worrying about the board’s prospects in the short to medium term was a new development, but I’ve never been more hopeful. If you’re upset or confused, just give it some time. Everyone is still learning the ropes, users and staff.
Thanks, although that also seems silly. Tags like this in a markup language are supposed to set the content off from the rest of the text. That’s part of the purpose of tags. Requiring them to also be on a separate line seems to negate a key purpose of the tag.
That doesn’t bother me, because I don’t need to know all those things. I need to be able to read posts, to find posts, and to make posts. Some of that isn’t as intuitive as I’d like, but I think I’ve gotten most of that stuff down today. (Well, except for finding posts…but I’m getting there.) If there are additional nice little features, I am comfortable picking them up slowly over time.
Not really so silly. Tags like [quote] or [spoiler] (or whatever it’s called here) inherently denote whole blocks of text, not just in-line snippets, so there’s no reason they should be on the same line as other text.
OTOH, tags that make sense to mix in with other text do work. For example, bold-face or underlined text tags work perfectly well intermixed with other text. Likewise, URL links work anywhere in mid-line you wish to put them. Spoiler tags like this peek-a-boo also work in mid line, which you couldn’t do with vBulletin.
Perhaps depending on your machine or browser, it might take some combination of Shift, Control, and the arrow keys. Or maybe it just doesn’t work the same. That’s one of the rewards of modern web programming! Write once, Debug everywhere!
