Anyone else seriously considering leaving?

One other thing about that clever little bar, If I drop into the thread I’ve been in before, but start paging up, it keeps a marker for where I started and I can just touch that to go back.

Several users have asked how quoting works, and several have given partial answers. In fact, it’s fairly easy and almost but not quite obvious. There are three things to know:

(1) To quote an entire post: Click on the Reply button at the bottom of the post. When the edit window opens, click on the speech-bubble icon at the top left of the edit tool bar. That will insert the entire post you are quoting with the proper quote tags. You can then delete parts of that as desired. ETA: If the post you are entirely quoting itself includes a quote, it will show the nested quote(s) as well.

(2) To quote part of a post, you can do as above, OR, highlight the part of the post you want to quote. When you do that, a button appears with a big quotation mark in it. Click on that. It will then open the edit window with the quoted text already there.

(3) But here’s a catch that catches everyone by surprise: If you quote the immediately previous post in its entirety, the smarter-than-thou software automatically deletes the quote box from your post as soon as you post it. :insert-old-SDMB-face-palm-here: GreysonCarlisle has posted a contrived work-around to prevent this. But apparently suffices for you to change just one character, or add one character, to accomplish this.

(Missed edit window for the above.)

ETA2: Another thing you need to know: If you are inserting or editing [quote] tags yourself, be aware that the [quote] and [/quote]
tags must be on lines by themselves or they won’t work.

See, one of the things that I find annoying (and I sure others do too) is there are a million billion zillion "little things " like this to know about your app (any app) and a lot of that isn’t documented or not easy to find, so you just learn by experimentation or accident or word-of-mouth like this.

Here’s one I’m still wondering about: As I type in this composer-window, there is a check mark that intermittently appears and disappears at the bottom of the screen just below this window? WTH is that?

I’ve been playing with these. Assigning a Profile Header picture doesn’t seem to do anything. Where do I see the picture I uploaded? In case it depends on the theme, I’m using Dark. And the User Card Background pic works fine.

Why did you have to do that?

To save things in case the time-out hamsters ate the post. It was pretty common for awhile.

You’ll figure it out, what else do you have to do?

It’s same Spaghetti-Os in a different can.

A bottomless can.

Interesting. Every time I got the error message, I just backed up a page and the post was still there, waiting to be posted.

You can unpin the stickies by clicking on the pin. They will then drop off.

I. couldn’t get the site to load on an iMac, using both Chrome and Safari. I’m posting on an iPad, seems to work ok.

Nevermind, I figured it out. I had to expand my profile page.

Lol!

[Padding for characters]

I’m in the get off my lawn crowd. I’m sure this is going to be a great improvement but I’m inundated with constant change at work. I always like improvements in software but I like it more when it’s hidden in the background with any new bells and whistles tacked on to the old interface.

If this perks up the site then kudos to the folks who created it.

A post here must have at least 20 characters in it. AFAICT, the check mark initially appears when your draft post has at least 20 characters. Why it disappears and reappears after that, damned if I know.

Five.

A couple of comments regarding the above quotes. @Dinsale1 (addressing your actual posted name – hopefully get “Dinsdale” back soon) you are only wrong in the first part, in that as our admin @AdminModTubaDiva herself and others have said above, we DO care that you stay, are you are a valued long-time poster. Please have patience and hang around. Things will only get better as the site itself with its many bugs gets fixed and strange settings straightened out, and as you become more familiar with its functionality and its quirks.

There may be some who are appreciating some of the site’s features, but I think anyone who says they prefer the new site as it is right now is very much in the minority, and I haven’t seen anyone at all claim that it’s “simple”, except for the very basic function of making a post. And I hope no one is trying to imply that you’re “stupid”, which would be a ridiculous implication. I know (and have known) brilliant academic researchers, some quite famous, who constantly struggle with their personal computers. I bet that Einstein, were he alive today and writing an academic paper, would have some choice words to say about Microsoft Word unsuitable for the ears of small children, and even more about Windows 10! The site’s user interface is in many ways distinctly counterintuitive and in many ways needless complex, and in other ways just badly designed, or at the very least, designed with social media paradigms in mind instead of the SDMB culture.

Hah! Just an example of what I just said above, when I tried to post my original, I got the message “Body is limited to 2500 characters; you entered 2770”. This is the sort of bullshit that has got to be fixed. This was the last paragraph of my previous post that I had to delete:

So please don’t be insulted and give it a chance. I consider myself to be fairly computer-savvy – the sort who helps relatives out with their computer problems – and I’ve probably figured out maybe 1% of this site’s functionality, and in the process also found quite a lot of things that don’t work. This is going to be a longer and more frustrating process than I think most of us imagined. Hang in there, and please stay with us. Every time you get frustrated by some dysfunction or stupid feature, remember that there are probably hundreds more who feel just the same way!

I also get a check mark, but mine comes with a label that says I can turn off, or turn on, as the case may be, previewing of my post.

Are you working on a mobile or other small screen? That may put the check mark next to the label for preview on/off. I am using a full-size screen, where the check mark is at bottom center, and “Hide preview” is at bottom right, not near each other.
