Anyone else seriously considering leaving?

I hate not being able to find posts that I’ve posted in or am interested in viewing. This site is horrible.

Hey, cmyk, my new avatar resembles yours. I will be changing as soon as I can.

That would make a good TZ episode.

This poor protagonist would retreat to the mountains, Unabomber-style, rather than be driven slowly insane.

per MoonMoon:
“Yes, your account was migrated without your assistance, but rather than creating a new password to go with it, you created a new username. It’s okay, it can be fixed. There are several posts explaining how to log in and create a new password.”

I did neither of these things. System informed me of changes. Not complaining at all … I get to visit/lurk here as usual, just as usual.

I read in a different thread that the new board software has a lot more client side functionality than the old one did, and that as a result, it’s more dependent on the local machine’s capabilities.

Or it could be that wherever this one’s hosted doesn’t have quite as good of a path to your device through the Internet relative to the old one. Just because the URL’s the same, doesn’t mean at all that the servers or the ISP are the same.

Taking a break from the SDMB aint a bad thing. You can always come back when things settle down.

Hey, there’s BEER?

The new system has been up for less than a day. We’re all still learning about it, and the admins are still ironing out the wrinkles. I don’t think I’m a genius or a power-user, but I’ve already figured out most of what I need to read and post here.

So, no, I’m not considering leaving, and I encourage others to stick around. Give the new system (and yourselves) a chance. Change isn’t easy, but it’s often worth it. I’m happy that we no longer have frequent time-outs.

It can help to reduce your expectations that the new system will be just like the old one, and instead figure out how to make it work for you. For instance, the old system relied heavily on email notifications. I figured out pretty quickly that email notifications don’t work the same way in the new system, in ways that I don’t like. But the new system does a very good job of notifying me without emails, so I disabled email notifications. I now realize the new system is better for me, because it doesn’t clutter up my inbox.

If we have a little patience and flexibility I think we’ll get through this transition easily.

NOOOOO! This exploring is fun.
(Yes I am a nerd and I love the people here).

You don’t even need to update your bookmarks. You can set your default view to Categories in your preferences.

“Hey, there’s BEER?”

Yes. In the huge cooler on the dock in the marina. Help yourself, but don’t fall in the water and drown. Too much paperwork doncha know…

You don’t have to do it on my account! Feel free to keep the one you have if you like it.

‘Am I leaving?’, lol.

I guess I’m lucky; getting back into my account was easy once I was reminded what to do, and after messing with it my preferences for a while, I’m not seeing any deal breakers. (I did, however, see a zombie warning, which was kinda cool.)

Sorry, what features were you looking for? I don’t quite understand,

FYI, Dinsdale1, I sent you a private message. You can probably see it by clicking your icon at the top right, then clicking the little envelope just below it in the menu that comes up.

If you click on your user profile icon in the top-right, then click on your username, then click on Activity, it’ll list all the current threads and posts of yours you were active in. Very convenient.

Also, I’m finding at the end of whatever thread I’m in, there’s a list of the most recent threads I’d been perusing at the bottom (Suggested Topics), so it’s a nice way to pop back into a thread I was reading earlier to see any new posts.

I guess I’m not ready to quit in a huff just yet–I’ve been around this place (and it’s old AOL predecessor) for a shockingly large chunk of my whole life–but I admit that (apart from the lack–so far–of 502/504 errors) there’s nothing much about this new board that I actually LIKE, and a number of things that I actively dislike. Some are things that I’m sure I’ll figure out, but I’m getting the impression that there are things about this place that are going to be more or less permanent annoyances for me.

I don’t like it either, but my understanding is that infinite scrolling is unfortunately a pretty fundamental feature of the brave new world of Discuss.

I agree with all this. And of course this place isn’t a tool that I have to learn to use to do a job that pays the rent.

There’s sure a hellovalotov functionality in Discourse that we never had in vBulletin. (some minor tweeks aside) I think it’s all good.
The home of all those amazing gifs on tumblr. Can

Coulda sworn I tried that, and whatever it did, it wasn’t that.

I’m struggling too, but one thing I’m liking already is that it takes me to the spot in a thread where I left off and I don’t have to scroll to find the unread posts. Maybe I could do that in the old regimen but I never knew how. This is automatic, as far as I can tell.

(On the old board, I would go to the bottom and scroll up until to find the new stuff)
