Never had one. I keep up with the people I want to fine as it is. So far those people still use one on one emails or actually use a phone. And they, like me, for the most part want most social interaction to be in person. So we arrange that. I tend to get pretty hobby oriented. So I join groups that send out emails so people with similiar interest can get together. If I get interested in something I join a forum dedicated to that. I find enough interesting stuff and cute LOL cats from email, random news headlines, and word of mouth as it is.
If my life circumstances were quite different, I might use Facebook. But as it is I don’t see the need for me.
Also, it’s kinda the line I drew for myself. I could see myself getting sucked into and particularly the bad aspects. I’ve got enough time wasting and drama in my life as it is. Kinda like a guy that has 3 TV stations and watches a lot of TV. Him getting cable/satellite or pay per view might be a bad idea.
Finally, if I want to piss off people with my points of view, beliefs, “facts”, and “arguments”, I just post on the SDMB. If I want to get pissed of at others points of view, beliefs, “facts”, and arguments I just read the SDMB
That sort of is me. We own a TV but use it only to watch BBC News and watch DVDs. (Of course, Thai programming is shit, but we can’t be bothered to subscribe to cable.)
Pertinent timing. Shortly after I entered my previous post, I heard my wife utter, completely independently, over from her laptop: “I hate Facebook.” Seems they’re trying to make her go to some page or do something before she can get to the page she wants, dunno.
You are right, young people are leaving Facebook in droves. The young, trend setters are finding other places to go where they are not inundated with pictures of Grandma’s cats. Coupled with every company both large and small establishing a Facebook presence for commercial reasons and you end up with the target audience being indistinguishable from the audience for the evening news on TV. Old people.
It won’t be long before being a Facebook regular will be as un-cool as an AOL email address. It is already in progress.
I could go on with more links, but there is no point. Early adopters have already moved on and the followers will go with them or be viewed as out of touch with what is now the cool thing. And like it or not, the youth demographic decides the market and where the money goes.
They aren’t going to cancel their accounts and may still visit, but is not “where it is happening”, it is where it was happening.
The Buick of the Online World. I wish I had said that.
