I was on It’s Academic also, but in the Baltimore/DC area. Actually, I was on it three times, the first time as a team member (1980-we lost), and the next year (1981) I was captain and we actually won the first round–first time in 10 years a team from our school made it past the first round. We almost won the second round, but wound up about 10 or 20 points shy. Just one more question Mac, come on, hurry up, don’t read so slow!!!
Probably just as well we lost, since I usually had to go to the bathroom and throw up from nerves afterwards. Not sure I could have taken doing that too many times!
I remember It’s Academic. We used to get it here in Toronto from a Buffalo station. I was also on my high school’s quiz team, only our show was Reach for the Top, hosted by Jan Tennant. She was also a newscaster for the CBC at the time; although years before, the RFTT host had been Alex Trebek.
Back in the late 1980s, my ladyfriend at the time caught the game show bug, and we went on a few of them. One was Definition, one of the cheapest of all time–Canadians will know what I mean by that (“Congratulations! You’ve won $10 in the bonus round!”). The other was Bumper Stumpers.
No, we never were champions. But we did get some rather nice watches as lovely parting gifts each time.
