Anyone excited about Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium?

I just saw it. Pretty good, not great. Had the lady I was with a bit choked up at times.
Dudes here who have saw it= 4.
Dudes who saw it and liked it= 3.

Dudes here who haven;t seen it but hate it= around 12.

So, 75% of dopers who actually saw the goddamn movie liked it.

All I know is, I was at Target before the movie launched and there was a whole shelf of Mr. Magorium branded stuff already. Can you say, “shameless movie tie in”? I thought you could.

I saw the poster and immediately thought, " Dustin got divorced and he needed a fast 10 million for attorney’s fees. " This thing looks abominable.

How’d you keep sane during V for Vendetta?

Entertainment Weekly gave it an F.

I agree. I have this picture taped up on my wall above my desk.

As for the movie, I’m not planning on seeing it (I only go to the movies a couple times a year), but if my little sister wants to see it while I’m home, I might take her just so I can look at Natalie Portman.

I love the movie reviews of dopers based on the previews and professional reviews. Actually I see this all the time. I generally scan through threads for the people that actually saw the movie. Just a fun part of the dope experience.

I know, everything today needs to be non-stop, quick cut scenes and of course over-loaded with cultural references. (well actually I enjoy those too.) But this movie worked. It was not a masterpiece, but it was fun.

So is that an endorsement or a negative?

Jim

shrug data point.

I’d like to point out that my review was based entirely on seeing a poster of it in the food court of the mall near my work. I think that’s got to be some kind of a record for an uninformed opinion on a work of art.

It was quite difficult as I saw it in the theatre with another hot buzzed Israeli chick.

I applaud you. That is impressive. For the record, somewhere in some thread, I am sure that I jumped in to bad mounth a movie I had not seen based on Tom Cruise being in it.

I like goofy kids’ movies. I like Natalie Portman. I like the idea of magical toys.
I do not like movies that are at 37% on the tomatometer.

Sure enough, we’re now on Thanksgiving vacation and my father-in-law today offered to take our boys (ages 11, 8 and 4), who were eager to see it. My wife asked me to go along to help out. =Sigh=

It was OK… I actually liked it more than I thought I would. A little. I guess I’d give it maybe a “B.” Natalie was cute as a button, Dustin’s accent/lisp was a little annoying, but Justin Bateman was understated and funny as the buttoned-down CPA. The little boy who helps in the store was very good, I thought.

Score is now (I think)
Dudes here who have saw it= 5.
Dudes who saw it and liked it= 4.
80% give it a mild thumbs up.

Dudes here who haven’t seen it but hate it= around 15.

I don’t know if I’m included in this score, but I have no opinion about the film at all. I just mentioned what the title reminded me of.

I just read that Kermit the Frog has a cameo in this film. I guess since he hasn’t had a steady job since he started working for Disney, he’s desperate for a paycheck too.

I couldn’t help thinking Magorium’s appearance might have been inspired by Gary Oldman’s look in Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

I thought the movie was okay. The kids loved it.

Yes, Kermit has a cameo, shopping in the store with a basket over his arm. He sees some kids staring at him and says, kindly but pointedly, “I’m just shopping… just… shopping.”

I just thought I’d drop in and let people know what kids thought. My 7th graders all just returned from seeing it and their opinion pretty much broke down as follows:

75%: Liked it

15%: Did not like it

10%: Didn’t care

Remember, these are 12-13 year olds, but it seems fairly popular to them. Then again, they love things ranging from Hannah Montana to Saw IV.

I didn’t know their alphabet went that high!

Jebus, that’s like having a hooker say you’re hung like a squirrel.
