I used to write for a popular website that has gone belly-up in the last year. Luckily, I archived most of my stuff (on authory.com, which provides that service for a reasonable fee) but I’d like to visit the website (which no longer exists) via the wayback machine, and sometimes I can. But sometimes I can’t. It’s hit or miss—sometimes the site seems to be down entirely, and other times I can access articles on it. But most commonly I get taken to a webpage that has six buttons on the top reading CALENDAR COLLECTIONS CHANGES SUMMARY SITE MAP URLs (SITE MAP is one word). I think the one I want is “URLs”, which takes me to a page listing various similarly-named links—when I click on one of those links, it sometimes takes me to the webpage I’m looking for (a long list of other links to articles.) Most of the time, though, it takes me nowhere, so I return to the URLs page and click another link, which sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t.
I’m wondering if URLs is the best one to click on. So far, it’s the best I’ve found but it’s pretty unsatisfactory. “CALENDAR” seems to take me to a calendar with certain dates highlighted but I can’t figure out how to get that page to show me articles. Am I doing this right, and sporadically succeeding? Or is there a better way to navigate the Wayback Machine?
It appears to be mostly up now. I was able to stream (but not download) some audio files, and the video player doesn’t seem to be working yet. Thanks to the website folks for getting it back online.
Omigosh, that was so fun! This was my first experience with ‘social media’ (and my last! Didn’t even notice f’book or tweetster coming across my radar after I found the Dope) .
I remember some of those discussions (though it’s bittersweet to see posters like TubaDiva…).
How busy was the traffic on the Dope for there to have been over 30,000 threads by that early date!?!
