Anyone go from comp to moitor via hdmi?

My computer doesn’t have an hdmi video card, but I wish it did. I don’t watch much from my computer to my tv, but when I do, the quality is certainly fine…but not as good as it could be. (And the dialogue doesn’t match up with the lips.) So it would be nice to get an hdmi video card.

And then, I’d get a new big ass lcd monitor that has an hdmi input. Anyone do this? Is the quality high compared to vga?

Also, I really don’t know much about what I’m talking about, so school me if I need it.

Thanks!

(Ugh…sorry about the title typo…I checked the post but didn’t check the title.)

I have never heard of the sound not matching up with the video problem but I am not an expert. My TV/Monitor is a 32" Samsung with regular video card inputs and it works equally well for both. Almost all LCD TV’s have PC inputs now although I am not sure just how big you want to go or how old your existing computer and video card are. Your problem may be with your computer software. To the best of my knowledge, this doesn’t require exotic hardware to do unless you are talking a really big screen. How big do you want?

The sound issue might have to do with the vga cable…it’s about ten feet long. But I don’t know. The other issue might be what I’m watching…1.3gb episodes of Mad Men through itunes. My laptop barely manages to pull off a passing impression of a computer playing those huge vid files; my desktop does a decent job.

I’d like a 21-23 inch monitor.

I had to run my monitor with the VGA connection because the video card output wasn’t good enough to drive the HDMI on the monitor properly. The display was corrupted. I’m using the HDMI with the new video card and I don’t really notice any quality improvement over the VGA connection. I tell you this so you know that sometimes you have to run the VGA connection even if you do have the HDMI connection on both. I suggest you go to a site that details HDMI connections to understand what is possible and what common problems can be.

I have a machine with HDMI going to a matrix feeding three TV’s. Works fine. All of the TV’s have the ability to adjust audio sync, but I’ve never had to use it. Check your TV; you may not need to make the change to HDMI.

HDMI is DVI with digital audio and DRM added. Many computers and video cards have DVI digital output available. Here’s a $7.95 adapter that converts from DVI to HDMI. If you’re just looking for a sharper picture and have DVI-out available, you could easily drive an HD monitor, assuming your drivers will output at HD resolution. If you also need to send audio to the HD monitor, you could just route the analog audio to the TV, or if available you could drive the audio with an S/PDIF link.

I’m running HDMI from my comp to my 52" Sony XBR. I’ll never look back.

I don’t understand the need for folks to have a monitor and a separate TV. The quality I am experiencing is nothing short of amazing. People who visit my home act like they had no idea, such a thing could be done. I blame it on electronic marketing.

Really exceptional for 1080P x264 viewing. Great for Hulu and other streaming video, as well as the higher definition Youtube. It feels like a true HTPC with the computer (internet option), as well as regular cable TV.

Just do it, you won’t regret it.

I remember a few years ago, some monitors had significant latency between when they received the video signal and when they displayed it. If the audio was routed to a different output, like a receiver, with a shorter delay, then it could get ahead of the video. High end receivers had an option for an adjustable delay to put the audio back in sync.

Monitor reviews used to discuss the latency in the monitors, since it could be a significant issue in game playing. Do they still do that?
