Last night I got back from a 6-day trip to Monterey & San Francisco that included a tour of Alcatraz on Sunday afternoon. Of all the tourist-y things we did, that’s the one I was most excited about and I really enjoyed it (I know, I know: run-down prison that wasn’t in use for very long, whoopee … but I liked it :D). I only bought one t-shirt on the trip, and it was from Alcatraz.
And I left it on the tour bus.
:smack: :smack: :smack:
I didn’t notice it was missing until this morning. I called the tour company, and they don’t have the shirt – it’s gone. So I went to the official Alcatraz website, and the link to the online bookstore doesn’t work. Sure, I could waste time looking at all of the other “Alcatraz souvenir” websites, searching for the same shirt, but instead I figured I’d turn to the Dope in hopes that someone might be going there soon and would be willing to work something out with me.
So: If anyone is planning a visit to Alcatraz and is willing to buy a t-shirt and mail it to the East Coast (at my expense, of course), please let me know!
Ouch, talk about crappy timing; about 2 months ago I gave my Alcatraz Swimming Club t-shirt to the Good-Will people. Lord knows where it is now. Sorry for your loss.
I think most of the landfill Fisherman’s Wharf is built on is unsold “ALCATRAZ PSYCHO WARD” and yellow SF fleeces where the “SF” looks vaguely ripped off from those “CK” shirts from the 90s.
Well, the Alcatraz shirt that I bought was cool. I’m pretty sure it was this one: the front looks right, but there’s no mention of any text on the back (which my shirt had). Between that and the size thing, I’m really kicking myself for leaving it on the stupid bus.
I saw plenty of those SF shirts! I was traveling with my father, and he decided that he wanted a miniature cable car: he had an idea of the kind of thing he wanted, and it wasn’t the wooden ones that are everywhere, so we went into just about every souvenir shop on Fisherman’s Wharf.
Sadly, there was no chance of that on my end: our 2 days in Monterey were full of sightseeing and trips down memory lane (I was born there, but we left when I was 9 months old: on Friday we went to CHOMP and I got a stuffed animal with a sweater that says “I was born at Community Hospital of Monterey” :)). By the time we had dinner and got back to our rooms each night, I was beat. We stayed in a kick-ass motel in PG those two nights, though, so I didn’t mind so much. <grin> I was hoping for a San Francisco get-together Saturday night, but didn’t even have the time/energy for that! Probably just as well, because our motel that night was way the hell away from downtown and not near a Muni station. Would have been cool to meet some SF-area Dopers, though!
Believe it or not I did think of that, and will try it if this thread doesn’t pan out by the end of the week. I have a feeling that the odds of them offering sales over the phone are slim, along with the odds of them being able to sell me an item that isn’t on the website, but you never know…
