I’d love to get one, but I can’t justify the expense (let alone afford it). I don’t live anywhere near a compact metropolitan area (Oklahoma City is a metro by Oklahoma standards, but it is very very spread out). What could I use it for?
There’s a rental place not to far from where I live. I’ve been thinking about a thread wondering how long it was till I got ran over by one. People tend to go as fast as they can with them. And boy, once they feel they have a hang of it they whip around objects and corners.
I certainly could make use of one if I owned it. Especially if I had the little tow bed that gets pulled behind. Go to the bank, shopping. Although I just walk to those places now. It’d just rob me of my main source of exercise.
There is a similar product with 4 wheels, no high tech gizmos to right yourself and it costs a lot cheaper. Seems like it’d be easy to tip though.
It seems neat, but I simply can’t justify the sheer laziness of it all. If I want to get from A to B faster, I’ll get myself a bicycle or a pair of rollerblades.
The school I work for purchased 15 of them. Pre-ordered before the government contracts in postal complexes et. al. The campus security uses them, and even in the application to come to school here there is a question: What do you think about the SEGWAY SCOOTER?
I’ve had the chance to hope on one from time to time. There is a thread here somewhere that explains it all. In a nutshell they are a heck of alot more stable than you’d think, and they really do go at a good clip. 20 second on one for the first time and you basically have it down pat. Most returning students here are used to seeing them. And the student security members really have a lot of fun with them. It’s odd, your brain is telling you thatyou should be tipping over, but you are not tipping anywhere. They are also heavier than they look.
I guess I’m slightly off-topic here…but how well does a Segway cope with you getting a well-timed kick from the side? I only ask because that’s a favourite pasttime for the kids where I’ve lived, to take pot shots at cyclists.
They’re used on my campus as well: they’re perfect for the Physical Plant people to use when they need to get across campus and need some equipment but not a lot. (The ones I’ve seen have a ‘tool belt’ of sorts for added equipment capacity.) They can go spots where the pickups/trucks can’t, and riding on a Segway during the hot summer months is much easier than biking or walking. Also, parking can be at a premium here: I’d much rather have to walk around a Segway parked by a door, then having one of their pickups blocking the sidewalk or the road when they’re doing a service call.
And it looks like they’re starting to indirectly save money: using Segways in situations where it makes sense (instead of the pickups or trucks) reduces the wear and tear on the vehicles and saves on gas.
But personal use? It wouldn’t make sense for me: the sidewalks in this area are crap, and I would never ride the Segway on the road (even if it was legal, which I’m not sure it is here) with the way people around here drive. It makes more sense for me to hop into my Miata and putter over to what I need to get done, even if it doesn’t have much more storage space than the Segway!
