Rather than letting these knee-jerk reactions and uninformed opinions stand as representing the Michael Teachings, I thought it would be nice to include a real description of what it is all about. You can still reject the teachings as valid for you on an individual basis, but that’s not the same thing as denigrating them from uninformed prejudices. This teaching isn’t for everyone, and it’s useless to a lot of people. For some, it helps put into perspective a lot of life, but that’s the nature of any teaching we are drawn toward. A great teaching doesn’t TELL you the truth, it helps you to understand your own truths, and then to expand beyond those to understand others’.
None of the above opinions or anecdotes reflect the teachings. At all. There is nothing in the teachings that instructs or asks anything of those who study and apply them. In fact, it’s absolutely, profoundly, the opposite.
CHANNELING
Yes, it is a “channeled” teaching, and that can be problematic in undermining its credibility, mostly because there is so much bullshit and fraudulence in this field, but when channeling is legitimate, you can think of it as just another form of creativity and a way to access or form perspectives that help us to understand, accept, and navigate life. It’s not that different from any other art or profession, with its frauds, misunderstandings, and legitimate professionals. The important part here is what is being taught. And there is nothing in the teachings that asks people to sell their homes, be different from who they are, or to impose beliefs on others. Nothing at all.
WHAT IS THE TEACHING?
The Michael Teachings is a system of self-understanding that encourages personal responsibility and a keen awareness of how your choices shape your life. It encourages you to see life from a higher perspective, while encouraging the honoring and accepting the everyday challenges of being human. This teaching is just one map of many for finding or creating your way through your life, your relationships, and the universe of experiences.
The Teaching suggests that that the only purpose behind life, is life, itself. There is no profound, exalted, or mysteriously secret reason behind our lives. We are each “fragments” of some original source, imbued with the creative impetus to seek experience within a spectrum of possibilities. Thus, in any given lifetime nothing is wasted because ALL experience is valuable, even the “bad stuff.” The need to judge those experiences as “good” or “bad” is a convenience, but a relative concept. Michael describes experiences as neither “good” nor “bad”, but that our “Essences” learn from ALL of it, though we eventually grow to be inclined toward more expansive, embracing experiences, rather than more restricting, limited paths of fear and defense. In addition, Michael teaches that the Universe is not a chaotic, random system of events that we simply have to endure, but rather that there is an awesome structure that can be comprehended by us to some degree. This helps lend us a better understanding of our personal part in the larger scheme of things. This understanding comes from our personal experience, our personal pace, and not from imposition of ideology or cosmology.
Michael does teach that reincarnation is valid. As a soul gains experiences, so does it gain maturity and wisdom, which is identified by what Michael refers to as a “soul age.” They teach that every soul goes through 7 stages of maturity across as many lifetimes as it takes. There is no one to measure a soul’s maturity except the individual soul, itself. As we gain experience, we learn to be more aware, more compassionate, more connected, more sensitive, and more peaceful, but we also go through a spectrum of experiences that naturally include all things horrifying and beautiful. Just like any individual within a lifetime, our Essences, eventually, “grow up” over several lifetimes. We, eventually, gain enough experience that the Soul and the Personality within a lifetime begin to co-create, decide, and choose more consciously, bringing to the lifetime a greater encompassing sense of the spectrum of Truth, Love, and Energy. This leads to a greater sense of acceptance for both the self, and others, since there is no single hard truth, one way to love, or one ideal of beauty.
Your Essence creates the Body and Personality for every lifetime. A Personality is described with components that help us to understand ourselves, but is not for the sake of pigeon-holing us. Each person is described as having a Goal (a primary motivation for the lifetime), a Mode (how you relate to others and how you reach your Goal), an Attitude (a basic perspective, or primary philosophy through which you interpret life), a Centering (how you tend to navigate and react to experiences), and a couple of basic Fears are developed in our youth (developed as a habit for protection), and so on.
There are 7 Roles/Essences, 7 Goals from which to choose, 7 Attitudes, 7 Modes, 7 Basic Fears, and so on.
This might sound complicated or even limited, but it’s just one of many ways to help us understand the dynamics of who we are at the core, and to gain self-awareness through the understanding of how our Personality might function, which helps to free us from destructive criticism of others and ourselves, enabling us to enjoy this life, and to make more constructive choices, increase the Love, Understanding, Compassion and Peace in our experiences and relationships to others and to the self.
The basic core of the Michael Teachings can be summed up in the phrase:
“We are here to learn how to choose, and to choose how to learn.”
So all of the cosmology and details of the teachings are only to serve the student with a way to understand his or her choices, to encourage us to be responsible for our choices, to understand how others choices impact us, to understand how we navigate all of it, to understand where we have control and where we do not, and then we can choose what to do from there.
So, the teaching might not be for you, and channeling might be a weird medium for delivery, but it’s one of the most comprehensive, anti-imposing, humble teachings I’ve ever come across.
