Anyone have experince with Quip Toothbrushes?

After a recent trip to the dentist it turns out Mrs. Cups and I need some electric toothbrushes. In a wonderful bit of serendipity, one of Mrs. Cups’ podcasts had a sponsor from Quip, which seems to be the Dollar Shave Club of toothbrushes.

It seems pretty affordable and a pretty cool product, but I worry about the quality of it because it’s a mail-order product and I’ve personally had horrible shaves with the DSC razors. Then again, millions of people love DSC, so what do I know?

Anyone here use Quip?

No, I don’t use that, although I use an Oral-B electric toothbrush. And the Quip isn’t any cheaper than some of the Oral-B toothbrushes. (The cheapest Quip seems to be forty bucks, while the cheapest Oral-B toothbrush on Amazon is 35 bucks.)

Welcome to the new world. Everything as a ‘service’.

I haven’t used Quip, but I have used Oral-B rechargeable electrics (with rotating, not back-and-forth heads) for decades. I like them a lot, and my only complaint has been the cost of the replacement heads: packs of three generally cost no less than $15 online and $20 or more in stores. (Non-OEM heads are cheaper in both senses of the word and not worth buying, IME.)

Last summer I bought one of these as a travel toothbrush, instead of carrying the bulkier rechargeable home unit, and I love it! It’s small, light, cheap, powerful, waterproof, and runs on a single AA battery that lasts a long time. I got it in July, and have used it every day since and I may have replaced the battery once.

I haven’t needed to replace the head yet, and I’m not sure it is removable, but at this price, buying a whole new unit is no more expensive than replacing just the head of my old Oral-B or the Quip.

Quip looks very slick and seems designed and marketed to appeal to an upscale audience, but I’ll bet it doesn’t offer any substantial benefits over less expensive plebian units like the one I’ve linked to.

And personally, I prefer rotating heads.

My spouse bought a set (and subscription) for Quip for the both of us. They are sleek and good for travel packing.

But as a toothbrush they’re un-mittigated crap. The battery makes the handle vibrate, that’s it. They are nothing like any Oral-B or similar model with back-and-forth or rotating brushes. It’s just a toothbrush with rubbery bristles and a handle that buzzes.

We soon went back to our Oral-B.

I have a Quip. I got the plastic model and didn’t get the toothpaste refills. Been using it for 3 months now, so I should be getting my new brush head in the mail soon. Last week I had a dental cleaning and the hygienist asked me if I had recently gotten an electric toothbrush. She said it was doing an excellent job and that my gums were very healthy.

Well, shit you people don’t help me at all! :D:D:D

Harrumph! I suggested something better and cheaper!

Why are you thinking of buying this rather than an Oral-B or Philips Sonicare toothbrush (the two dominant players in the business)? With this one, you have to buy replacement brushheads from the manufacturer, and they want you to subscribe to an ongoing service. The Oral-B and Philips brushheads, on the other hand, are available everywhere (Amazon, CVS, Target, wherever) and non-OEM replacements are also available.

If I were getting a new one today, I’d buy this one: ANJIELA Automatic Electric Wireless Charging Toothbrush White

But I’ll wait until my Sonicare breaks down.

He wasn’t also selling a brand of electric toothbrushes, was he? First item is make sure you weren’t part of some up-sell attempt. Second item, if you don’t want to get electric toothbrushes is to brush your teeth longer, and make sure you’re doing it correctly. People rarely brush the inside of their teeth correctly. Then floss. It’s a pain, but it works and makes your gums tougher. In the past, Consumer Reports has said electric and manual toothbrushes are equally effective as long as you brush teeth thoroughly for 2 minutes, twice a day. Even recent studies show that electric toothbrushes only offer a slight advantage. I buy my toothbrushes on Amazon for cheap; and change at the end of each tube of toothpaste. My wife and don’t share toothpaste.

The problem with your product was it was too cheap to actually buy off Amazon, we had to add other crap, but it did give us some ideas.

There was no upsell attempt because the actions were independent of each other. The dentist said “Your gums are bad, electric toothbrushes are the best, you should get one.” Then, a day later, Mrs. Cups was listening to one of her godawful Real Housewives podcasts and they were sponsored by Quip. I mean, surely the podcast gets money when we go to their custom site, but it actually was serendipity that we got the message in the first place.
