Anyone have information about the new city wide wireless networks coming soon?

One of our support techs and I were gabbing the other day, and he said there were these new city wide wireless networks coming soon that were going to change the whole broadband landscape as soon as the specifications and RF bandwidth sharing issues were hammered out. . He said it would be like wireless for the home but would span several kilometers. He had to go at that point for a service call in another office.

I was intrigued by this. Anyone have information on what specifically he might have been talking about?

Well, the IEEE 802.16 (broadband wireless standard) would be a good starting point: this link has a decent (read: short) take on it, plus a link to the offical website for the standard where you can get more info than you can shake a stick of RAM at.

As to ‘soon’? I haven’t a clue how soon any of this is going to be rolled out, and the only person I know off the top of my head that might know has been concentrating on IEEE 802.11e, so I don’t know how much they’d know about how 802.16 is going along.

That’s neat! Thanks!

No problem: I only knew the standard number off the top of my head because I’d seen it recently while doing some readings on another standard.

Are you thinking of something like this or this?
