A USB mini-drive is one of those things you can hang off a keychain and use to tote files around, instead of a Zip disk or the like. I’ve seen them advertised at $69 for 128 MB and $99 for 256 MB. This would be really handy for me, especially going back and for between Macs and PCs, but I’m just wondering what other folks’ experiences with this have been. Thanks!
I bought one about a year ago and have found an excuse to use it every single time I travel with my laptop. I use it for both PC to PC transfers and PC to MAC with no problems.
The only caveat is that you need a relatively modern computer/operating system (i.e. greater than Win98) or you need to find the specific drivers. On the MAC, it was a trivial plug and play situation. Also, I only have one USB port on my computer so it’s either the mouse or the mini-drive. Not too big a drawback in most cases, as I transfer the files I need and then “eject” the drive.
The mini-drives are relatively cheap, much smaller than carrying around a zip or floppy drive, and, in my experience, very useful.
Love it, the only thing that annoys me is that the drivers aren’t “standardised” yet. I get around this by having my drivers on a credit-card-sized CD with various lifesaving tools on it, like a good text editor, a good graphics editor, some mp3s, some pretty girls, some drivers.
i considered getting one but then I decided on SmartMedia cards because my camera uses them. You need a reader though.
Or. you could buy one of the usb memories that is also a built in SD reader. They are pretty groovy
Iteki, might you have a link to such a device?
I purchases a Belkin 32MB drive. It’s come in really handy at work! We have a network of 55 machines and I can put several different software tools on the drive and just keep it with me and use it wherever I need it. We purchased a second one for the staff who work on our website so they can transport large files back and forth when they work at home. Very handy little gizmo, and high on the cool factor, too
I love my 64MB drive for transferring files between my desktop & laptop (both are running Win2K). I got it for $30 after rebate – not a bad deal.
I got a 64MB one for my birthday last week. I adore it.

I have a Lexar 128MB one. I carry all my Powerpoint presentations on it so I can use just plug it in to any machine that happens to be there. Plus my POS company issued laptop is a P3 that sometimes decides it can’t be bothered to open big .ppt files and just gives up.
I recommend getting one to all my customers for backups. Then they always have a copy of their database with them, if they use it as a keychain.
