I’m hankerin’ for some new pets, and not sure I’m up for a kitten or another dog at the moment. I’ve been reading up on finches, and they really intrigue me - as an amateur birdwatcher, I like the idea of having almost-wild birds to watch anytime I want. I’ve had parakeets when I was a kid, and from what I hear, finches aren’t much more work.
I love Gouldian finches as well, but depending where you are, they can be pretty expensive ($80 per bird up here, compared to about $9 for a zebra finch). Zebra finches are noisy, if you like birds though, you probably won’t mind. The reason I have finches is that I have a friend who thought she would like listening to them
Spice finches are neat looking, and I really like their song.
Society finches will raise other finches babies, which is sort of neat (the zebra’s I have are quite the baby producers, but are completely lazy when it comes to looking after them).
I’ve had Zebra finches, they’re easy to care for and very cute. They do pretty much constantly make a cute little squeaking sound, but it is not loud or raucous. The Gouldians are beautiful. If you have the money, go for it!
I used to work in a pet store and took home all the ‘defective’ finches that they couldn’t sell and were going to destroy.
IMO, finches are sweet little birds. I love the noises they make, they’re easy to care for and not obnoxious (like my old roomie’s cockatiel that I wanted to flush down the biffy).
I’m trying to convice the bf that I need finches again.
I had finches when I was pretty young, and I loved those little birds! I would sit them next to an open window and they would “talk” with the wild birds. I would also tape record them talking to each other, and play it back to them. They went nuts, chirping and chirping.
Unfortunately, they died, and my mom wouldn’t let me get any more ):
