anyone know anything about kites?

We’ve got a couple beach trips planned this summer, and I’m thinking about kites.

I liked to fly one when I was a kid.

I guess I’m looking for a kite that is not a $3.99 piece of plastic that you could get at a beach supply store and will be junk in a day, but isn’t some $200 kite-hobbyist’s wet-dream either.

For instance, I’m not looking for one of those with the two handles that people make dip and dive.

Basically, a solid workhouse that will last and be fun to fly for me and my young nieces.

any pitfalls? price points? anything?

Thanks.

I bought one for about $25 in Lincoln City, Oregon about 10 years ago. It is nylon and still looks and flies great after many flights. It is a bit on the heavy side and needs a good breeze to get off the ground though. A quality kite shop will have a variety of kites in a wide price range.

Ask and ye shall receive.

I live on the ocean and I can tell you all of these are great fun, and you are looking for several things when purchasing a good kite. A solid construction, and an aerodynamic ability that will keep it up in the sky for hours without you doing much of anything. If you want it to do twirls and loops and such…look further down the linked page for one of those babies.

I recall some kite stores along the Ocean City boardwalk if you’re headed down there.

You’ll probably want a nylon delta kite, like the plastic ones we had when we were kids but much sturdier.

Actually, OC-NJ, not OC-MD.

I’d never noticed a kite store there before, but a google search indicates there is one.

Thanks for the link philosphr.

Looks like there’s a lot of stuff out there. Now the question is, do I want to drop that much coin on something I might get bored with. But, that’s for me to decide.

Never mind the coin, as long as you don’t tie anything metallic to your kite
