Anyone named Quatermain? Or Quartermain?

About Allan Quatermain from Rider Haggard books and the LXG movie… everyone, myself included, seems to naturally throw in an R to make his name Quartermain.

Are there many people named Quatermain? Is it an old English name or did Haggard devise it himself?

And what about Quartermain? Is it common?

(My Googlings have only brought me pages of debates about the comic and the movie.)

A search for the surname “Quartermain” at www.switchboard.com only brings up 58 numbers in the whole US.

“Quatermain” brings back no results.

Someone must have had that as a name somewhere, because they named a hotel after them.

Thank you, and let me add www.switchboard.com to my list of reference tools.

It's the darndest thing, but doesn`t that brochure sound as if the South African hotel was named after the fitional character, not the other way around?

Both spellings seem to be variations of “Quatremaine”.

I’ve read that Haggard himself mixed them up, but I’m having trouble coming up with a cite.

That page from the Quartermain family is a treat. I love the phrase, ‘our cousin, once removed by fiction.’

There’s a character in the soap opera General Hospital named Alan Quartermaine. I presume that the writers took the name from Haggard. I don’t see any resemblance in the stories or characters.

There’s a reasonably well-known sports-journo over here called Stephen Quartermain (yes, with the “r”).

There seem to be a coupla dozen Quartermains here in Oz - no Quatermain’s though

Character, nothing, there’s a whole family of Quartermains on GH. Edward, Lilah, Monica, Alan, A.J., Jason, Emily… NOne of them are in the habit of looking for King Solomon’s Mines though, too busy plottin and seducing and whatnot.

Any of these people related to Prof. Bernard Quatermass (Five Million Years to Earth or Quatermass and the Pit)?

The 1881 census of England has 879 people named one of these variants:

Quartermaine
Quaterman

Quatermaine

Specifically, 12 persons named Quatermain, most in Surrey or Middlesex. No one named Allan Quatermain.
