Or an AKC breed that that is not in the top 20 popular breeds? Any rare breeds that you would like to own? I would love to own a leonberger or dogo argentino.
What are the top 20 popular breeds?
I have a Collie and a Jack-Russell Terrier / Blue Heeler mix (probably). Both wonderful dogs.
I had a Carolina Dog for nine years, until she got very sick and I had to have her put to sleep two years ago. You know how every now and then someone gets that one pet who is a perfect match for them in every way? How the human and the animal can communicate perfectly, how each knows exactly what’s going on with the other, and you watch them interact and think, “This is why people have pets”?
Zeke and I were like that. I’m extremely reluctant to get another dog, just because of the massive expectations that I would necessarily bring to the relationship. I probably will in the next few years, but it won’t be the same.
I’ve got a Walker Hound.
Here’s a complete list of the AKC breeds by popularity.
My Pembroke Welsh Corgi falls just out of the top 20, at #23.
I don’t have a dog, now. And can’t get one, but once I do get somewhere I can have dogs, I’m going to get one of these breeds, myself.
Otterhound (first choice, but a bit on the loud side, from what I’ve read)
Canaan Dog (second choice, a good all-around dog, it seems)
Schipperke (third choice, if there’s a weight limit on the dog - and this is the least annoying of the small dogs I’ve seen)
I’ve got a border collie and an Akita.
Numbers 60 and 51, respectively on that list, but neither is any sort of rare breed.
I got the BC from a breeder when I was younger and dumber. We found the Akita. Next dog I get is either from a rescue org or the SPCA.
I have a Border Collie. My dog refuses to recognize the AKC.
Word of advice… many of them are notoriously difficult to housebreak. You may or may not find that annoying.
I have a Shiba Inu - #66 and getting less popular every day. They are definitely not the dog for everyone. More like a cat that has to be taken out for a walk 3 times a day.
Australian Shepherd at #34, and a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever at #118.
I like the blue merle Australian Shepherds, really beautiful dogs, eh?
And I kinda like the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers. I assume they must be healthier than the labs and goldens.
I used to own a pair of Ibizan Hounds, for which registrations used to consistently run in the bottom of the AKC. I quickly learned why. Not enough money in the world to convince me to live with one again. Whippets and Greyhounds are ever so much more pleasant to be around!
OtakuLoki, if you’re looking for a non-annoying small dog, consider a Pug. Depending on your aesthetic preferences they’re not necessarily the prettiest critters on the block, but I’ve never met one that knew it was a small dog. All that “multum in parvo” talk? It’s true.
I have a Jindo (http://www.kang.org/Jfac.html), which is not on the list.

She is a great dog, but when she was younger I couldn’t keep her out in the yard, because she could easily scale our six-foot fence.
I have two greyhounds. They are considered a rare breed by the AKC, as there are only 100-200 registered with them per year. But in actuality, due to the racing biz, there are quite a few more than that around. I love my doggies!
Selkie, how are Ibizans different? I would have thought they’d have similar personalities to the other sighthounds.
I dream of getting a Coton De Tulear

I like them too. Though I wish I can meet some of the dogs I am interested in and ask the owner questions. I am sure a breeder would be annoyed by one who ask questions about the breed without buying a puppy
I have a Rat Terrier. Fairly established breed, but not recognized by the AKC. There are 2 variations of the Rat Terrier; a short legged, barrel chested variant and a long legged, deep chested version. I have the latter, just a wonderful little dog if you don’t mind an extremely high energy dog. He’s almost 10 and still just thrashes like a puppy.
I have an English Shepherd, an American breed depite the name, registered with the UKC.
I have a husky. Not a true racing husky but about 50 pounds of elkhound/malamute/heeler? and perhaps somebody jumped a wolf 2-3 generations back.
The only bad breed trait she has is running game. LOVES to chase them deer.
