Then, I realized I could name his powers and thusly dubbed:
“Slide Rule” (melee punch)
“Problem Set” (area effect mind blank) aka “Homework”
“Modulating Beam” (didn’t think of a better name)
I added a cybernetic brain, and some light speed to go with the modulating beam. To lower cost, I also added timid.
I used the downloaded mesh for Man with Suit.
Unfortunately, this hero is next to useless because his modulating beam irradiates, doesn’t hurt turrets, and he can’t seem to hit the broad side of a barn. When it does hit, the victim slowly dies from radiation poisoning, a couple of HP at a time. An awfully painful death.
Next time, I’ll up the accuracy mod and add crack shot. Also, I think I’ll change it from irradiate to something better.
Yeah, I ended up melting Winter with El Diablo. The reason I was using ManBot through most of the mission was his long range attack using snowballs, oil drums, and cars. And he really packs a wallop with a lamppost, quite useful for taking out two Ice Queens at the same time.
Controvert: you really don’t need to download any more meshes from the Freedom Force site until they put up new ones; they ones they have now are already in the game in the custom_characters folder. I didn’t notice this until I downloaded all the current meshes.
BTW: I thought it would be fun to create a new skin for the obese hero, all gray so he’d look like a human Goodyear blimp! Naturally, I’d give him flying ability but I can’t figure out how to import the new skin into the game.
I finally picked this game up last Thursday and have been playing it obsessively ever since! I’m impressed – the control interface is pretty intuitive, and the atmosphere of the game cracks me up. Especially when you’re going after Nuclear Winter, and the background music sounds like something out of Hunt for Red October… until you realize that they’re singing “Nuclear Winter, Nuclear Winter” over and over again. Cracked me up.
I was surprised at some of the heroes who became useful later in the game. Of all people, The Ant became my favorite hero. (OTOH, I found Eve to be next to useless.) Basically, I’ve found that any attack form that does progressive damage (such as acid or radiation) are the most useful to have; just hit someone with it, back off and let the progressive damage tear 'em up.
As for Nuclear Winter, I found the best way to deal with him was to have Manbot carry oil drums over from the pier – and when you see him, chuck a drum at him. Between the impact of the drum and the explosion, I was able to take him down before he even got close to my hero squad; then got Minuteman over there to defuse the bomb with time to spare. (I didn’t care much for Manbot at that point; he’s slow and his attacks were nigh-useless… but in later missions, after he gets some XP and pumps up his Focus attack, he’s one of my favorites!)
What a great game. It’s one of the few I’ve bought in recent years that was actually worth the forty bucks I spent for it.
Oh, I did create a hero based on the Thug 2 mesh (the one with the bat) and the skin I used is the one with the Elvis-style sideburns. Now I have a former Elvis-impersonator called The King of Clubs!
On the topic of skins: hie thee over to Freedom Force Center – the user community has already cranked out skins for just about every comic book hero I can think of.
And a few non-comic book heroes as well: Muhammed Ali, Richie and Pottsie from Happy Days, Bettie Page, etc. There are skins for the Supreme Court Justices, f’rcryinoutloud. One can only hope for skins for SNL’s “Ex-Presidents”. Oh, and there’s a “New England Patriot” skin to replace Freedom Force’s main character.
Didn’t this game just come out a few days ago?
I tried the demo this weekend. Way cool. Will definitely get the game once I finish Medal of Honor.
I believe the character mesh/skin specs, and utility to view them, were released some months ago. Pretty shrewd move on Irrational’s part, games these days can live or die on mod potential.
I’m in what I’m pretty sure is the final few missions now, and it’s the first time they’ve been challenging. Sort of a shame, the levels I’m currently going through just seem rushed–perhaps they were made around the time when the publisher was really leaning on developers to hurry up and go gold. But only sort of–they don’t seem terribly unbalancedly difficult, just more stringent as to workable teams, and worse comes to worse I can easily afford a custom character designed to slam through persisting bottlenecks.
