I’m still kind of bummed that Red Dead Redemption didn’t come out on the PC. So a store near me has a game called Gun, which looks to be a wild west shooter. Has anyone played it and care to give me a little rundown on it?
Haven’t played it but it got pretty good reviews, although maybe not as good as RDR. I did want to say that Rockstar for some reason sits on the PC version of their games for about a year after the console versions. So it may come out someday, unless you’ve seen something saying otherwise.
I did. It’s not all that good IMO, and I never got around to finishing it. It wants to be a Far West GTA of sorts, but there is really little to do or even explore besides the storyline. The combat is forgettable, the missions repetitive and the poker gets old real quick.
A good Wild West shooter, however, is Call of Juarez and its sequel, originally titled Call of Juarez 2. It doesn’t try to be anything else than a dumb rail shooter, but it does it amazingly well and with atmosphere coming out of its ears. There’s nothing quite like gunning people down while reciting fire&brimstone Bible quotes.
The quickdraw duels are a (mandatory) pain in the nethers though.
I enjoyed Gun but it was really pretty short.
I thought it was terrific (it’s on GameTap so I played it for free). Caveats: it only took a couple of days to play through in its entirety, and the graphics are kind of crappy. It’s also not as “sandboxy” as, say, GTA3+.
I played it on the XBox. It’s okay. Not great, but okay. I bought it used for about $10 or $15, and got my money’s worth. At full price, I’d have felt ripped off.
I got it at full price on PS2, and yes, I felt ripped off. Once you finish the main (very short) story, there’s really not much to do, as the “open world” that they provide you is sparsely populated, and the towns all look identical. In addition, it was kind of glitchy - more than once I literally got hung up on scenery and had to restart from a save point.
Too bad RRD isn’t coming out on PC - it is great fun, and it looks awesome.
I played it on the Xbox.
It’s racist. It’s stupid. It’s unnecessarily violent and bloody. Cardboard characters that you really can’t sympathize with at all. Cheesy western music.
One of my favorite games for the original Xbox.
My favorite thing in the game is that you can spend $15 of in-game currency (no small amount- you can get an upgrade for your revolver for the same amount) to unlock scalping. What does scalping do? You can press a button to violently scalp your defeated (and sometimes still-living and loudly screaming) enemies. No actual in-game effect. No mechanical bonus. Just a scalping animation.
I fucking love this game.
Warning: The graphics are dated. Also, it’s super unrealistic- if you’re looking for a RDR substitute or a serious game of any kind you’ll be disappointed. Others have expressed being ripped off but I recently re-bought it for the 360 for like ten bucks and it was well worth it for me. Almost have all the achievements, too.
I played it on the original Xbox. At first, it looks like you have GTA-scale freedom, but the sidequests are actually pretty few in number, and quite repetitive. The weapon upgrades you can buy don’t really give you much (especially since, if memory serves, you kind of “auto-upgrade” with weapons as you progress through the story), so there’s really no incentive to do these missions unless you like the action. I think you can play a Texas Hold 'Em minigame, but, again, since earning money isn’t really that important, the novelty wears off quick.
As far as gameplay goes, I think it’s pretty standard. You have to drink whiskey to refill your health bar, and you have a slo-mo (i.e., quick-draw) mechanic, but I don’t think it’s as well done as RDR, or even Call of Juarez (also a good, but very simple, game).
The voice acting is okay, as far as I can remember. Kris Kristofferson and Tom Skerritt are in it, and the guy who played The Punisher plays the lead character (Thomas Jane?). (checking Wikipedia) Oh, yeah, Lance Henriksen too!
The game was one of the first available for the Xbox 360, but I played it on the Xbox. I thought it was a pretty good looking game for the time. I’m not sure if the PC version is just a port of the console version. If so, yes, the graphics will look a bit dated.
The PC version is a straight port.
Racist?
Every part of the game that had Indians came off as a little racist to me, yes.
