Anyone read Rant by Chuck Palahnuik? Help me figure it out (Spoilers)

I get that Green Taylor Simms traveled back in time to impregnate those women and their descendants and that eventually Buster/Rant came out of their, for some unknown purpose or another, I guess in a God/Jesus sort of thing (Palahnuik drives the Jesus thing in very heavily), and I’m willing to suspend disbelief at the not-clearly-described way they travel back in time. It is my second book of his to read, after Fight Club, and overall I thought it was… interesting, in the way that only Palahnuik can do, One Trick Pony criticisms aside. But, among other things, there’s something in the ending I don’t get (other than the lack of a fulfilling resolution). They’re waiting outside Buster’s ma’s place, waiting for someone to appear, when out of the shadows emerges… Bodie Carlyle?

I don’t get it. What’s the significance about Bodie of all people showing up then? It’s clearly written like this was a revelation, that he suddenly had a very important feature into the whole plot. But it isn’t made clear, at least not to me.
Echo Lawrence: And Irene said, “Bodie? Bodie Carlyle?”
By then, the figure had one foot on the bottom porch step. The screen door squeaked, and Irene said, “Get in here. You’re going to catch your death…”

Bodie Carlyle (☼ Childhood Friend): You see, life only turns out good or bad for only a little bit. And then it turns out some other way.
And that’s about it. There’s a sort of denouement, some last words and commentary, but nothing more from Irene or Bodie.

So I don’t get it. Is Bodie Buster, or even Green Taylor Simms? Is he someone else, or… what? I’m at a loss.
