Anyone remember this older sci-fi book about SPACE WEREWOLVES?

In roughly '85 or so I had this book about humans out in space. They had some sort of faster-than-light technology, and a side effect of FTL travel was that a small percentage of people turned into werewolves. The plot is about one such guy whose crew drops him off somewhere random rather than deal with a werewolf on board, and he gets into some shenanigans there, including dealing with another humanoid star-faring race.

Anyone else remember this book, and what it was called?

This isn’t a good match, but it does have a werewolf in space “The Werewolf Principle” by Cliff Simak http://www.amazon.com/Werewolf-Principle-Clifford-D-Simak/dp/0879977086

Definitely not the book I’m looking for, but that looks really interesting, thanks!

Oh geez - I know this one. A. Bertram Chandler I think – Frontier of the Dark (1984) probably.

(Can’t seem to find any reviews, though.)

That’s it! You guys know everything!

Not to drag this thread too far off topic but the part of the story involving FTL creating werewolves sounds profoundly silly (unless, of course, the book is supposed to be a comedy). Aside from the existence of horror movie lore, there’s no reason why it had to be werewolves. It could’ve just as well been werecats, werebears, or weresloths.

Definitely not a comedy, but also definitely a little silly in that regard.

The other star-faring humanoid race was also affected by the FTL drive, but their beasties were more cat-like, if I remember correctly.
