Probably the most disturbing movie I’ve ever seen. It made me lose faith in humanity.
That’s what you get for renting something because it was mentioned in an Eminem song.

Wait a second…you actually figured out whether it was a drama or some satirical comedy? I thought I was watching an updated version of A Modest Proposal ferchris’ sake.
And the scary thing is, the movie has a disturbing cult following on IMDB…
I think I’ll syphon some character development from Bicentenial Man and try injecting it into this piece of garbage.
This movie makes me cry. Because I bought it. If it’s “two-thumbs up and four stars,” but labeled at 4.95, there’s a problem.
But it’s VHS…it’ll degrade soon.
Yeah, it’s pretty sick and depressing.
What is it with everybody losing faith in humanity? Sheesh.
Guilty Conscience?
Yes, Guilty Conscience
And this, children, is a fine example of bringing a thread full circle.

You think that was bad, you should see Gummo which was written and directed by the guy who wrote Kids.
Come now. Gummo had some wonderful parts. Like, um … the uh … well, there was the bunny gettin’ it on in the hot tub.
Oh my gosh, I was thinking of this very song during one on my finals this past evening… during one of my FINALS! of all times. Glad I had already completed most of the exam during the first 90 minutes.
I meant the MOVIE “Kids”, not the song (after previouly wandering around the CCR thread). I guess it’s time for me to go to go to bed.
“Kids” was a brilliant and deeply disturbing film. (Telling detail: Note that the legless panhandler on the subway is moving himself around on a skateboard.)
Larry Clark (director) later made “Bully,” which was kinda disturbing and not at all brilliant, and Harmony Korine (writer) later made “Gummo,” both brilliant and disturbing. “Kids” was by far the best and most original project either of them has been involved in. Korine said recently that he was going to “retire” after his few films. If he does, he’ll have an imposing track record.
I heard rumors that Larry Clark is simply a pedophile who just made Kids so he could be around younger types in various stages of undress…Don’t know if it is true or not though…
The funny thing is is that there are definite scenes from my life that could have gone into that movie easily. Kids weren’t kids in my day, that’s for sure.

Tcat, that’s a pretty rough thing to say about anyone without any substantiation whatsoever.
I’m on the side of people who found “Kids” a very depressing, very good film. If I was to criticise it, I’d say that it was rather sensationalistic in places. However, I also reckon its probably fairly accurate about the way some kids are.
You know what makes the movie 10 times as disturbing to watch? The channel you watch it on (I think Showtime) introduces it as a documentary  . We were really freaked out until the credits gave character names.
Truthfully, I’m not saying this about ‘anyone’. I AM saying it about someone who has made multiple explicit movies about minors in various stages of undress and sexual positions. This of course can boil down to an argument about where art ends and pornography begins, which is quite possibly the boundry that he is trying to test. While not painting myself as Jesse Helms to Maplethorpes art, I’m not sure that if we heard that Clark was arrested on pedophile charges we’d be going  or :smack:

They actually joke about these rumors on the Bully DVD. There’s a featurette with the various actors being interviewed. During the course of these supposedly real interviews, all of the actors, women and men, say they slept with Clark to get their part.

That’s all I recall about the film, which I rented years ago. I thought it was garbage.
You know what’s a real bad Clark movie? This one.
Only Cinemax would show something like this.
I thought the movie was just dumb and pointless, made purely for shock value.
Although “My girl’s got mad flava” line always makes me sick to think about…
Zany factoid:
I used to see the guy on the train every once in a while. He really did do that singing thing.
Also, I hear tell one of the actors has passed away somewhat recently - “Casper”, I think.
