Jeannie: Just curious. There’s this statistic that’s something like: If you put 100 people in a room, there’s a 70% chance that two will share a birthday. I figure with so many Dopers, SOMEONE must share my day–March 11th.
Actually, it’s very close to 100%.
For 100 people the chance is 0.0000307248928% that they’ll all have unique birthdays. The opposite, that at least two of them have the same would be 100%-0.0000307248928% or 99.9999692751072%.
Wrong thinking is punished, right thinking is just as swiftly rewarded. You’ll find it an effective combination.
For those wondering about the math:
The chance of two people having unique birthdays is the chance that the second person’s BD is one of the 364 dates that aren’t the first one’s BD:
<BLOCKQUOTE><font size=“1” face=“Verdana, Arial”>code:</font><HR><pre>
364
P(2) = — = 0.99726 = 99.726%
365
The converse, that they have the same BD, is 1-P(2) = 0.00274 or 0.274%
The chance that 3 people have unique BDs, P(3) is the chance that the third's BD is unique from the others' (363/365) **times** the chance that the others have unique BDs, P(2):
<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">code:</font><HR><pre>
363 364 363
P(3) = P(2) * --- = --- * --- = 99.180%
365 365 365
and the converse of this, that at least two of them have the same BD is 1-P(3) or 0.82%.
Following this pattern, at 23 people, the chance is pretty much 50/50 that at least two of them share a BD.
For n people:
code:
n P(n) 1-P(n) - ----------- --------- 1 100.000000% 0.000000% 2 99.726027% 0.273973% 3 99.179583% 0.820417% 4 98.364409% 1.635591% 5 97.286443% 2.713557% 6 95.953752% 4.046248% 7 94.376430% 5.623570% 8 92.566471% 7.433529% 9 90.537617% 9.462383% 10 88.305182% 11.694818% 11 85.885862% 14.114138% 12 83.297521% 16.702479% 13 80.558972% 19.441028% 14 77.689749% 22.310251% 15 74.709868% 25.290132% 16 71.639599% 28.360401% 17 68.499233% 31.500767% 18 65.308858% 34.691142% 19 62.088147% 37.911853% 20 58.856162% 41.143838% 21 55.631166% 44.368834% 22 52.430469% 47.569531% 23 49.270277% 50.729723% 24 46.165574% 53.834426% 25 43.130030% 56.869970% 26 40.175918% 59.824082% 27 37.314072% 62.685928% 28 34.553853% 65.446147% 29 31.903146% 68.096854% 30 29.368376% 70.631624% 31 26.954537% 73.045463% 32 24.665247% 75.334753% 33 22.502815% 77.497185% 34 20.468314% 79.531686% 35 18.561676% 81.438324% 36 16.781789% 83.218211% 37 15.126599% 84.873401% 38 13.593218% 86.406782% 39 12.178034% 87.821966% 40 10.876819% 89.123181% 41 9.684839% 90.315161% 42 8.596953% 91.403047% 43 7.607714% 92.392286% 44 6.711463% 93.288537% 45 5.902410% 94.097590% 46 5.174716% 94.825284% 47 4.522560% 95.477440% 48 3.940203% 96.059797% 49 3.422039% 96.577961% 50 2.962642% 97.037358% 51 2.556801% 97.443199% 52 2.199549% 97.800451% 53 1.886189% 98.113811% 54 1.612304% 98.387696% 55 1.373771% 98.626229% 56 1.166765% 98.833235% 57 0.987754% 99.012246% 58 0.833502% 99.166498% 59 0.701055% 99.298945% 60 0.587734% 99.412266% 61 0.491120% 99.508880% 62 0.409043% 99.590957% 63 0.339561% 99.660439% 64 0.280952% 99.719048% 65 0.231689% 99.768311% 66 0.190430% 99.809570% 67 0.155996% 99.844004% 68 0.127361% 99.872639% 69 0.103633% 99.896367% 70 0.084042% 99.915958% 71 0.067925% 99.932075% 72 0.054712% 99.945288% 73 0.043919% 99.956081% 74 0.035136% 99.964864% 75 0.028012% 99.971988% 76 0.022256% 99.977744% 77 0.017622% 99.982378% 78 0.013905% 99.986095% 79 0.010933% 99.989067% 80 0.008567% 99.991433% 81 0.006689% 99.993311% 82 0.005205% 99.994795% 83 0.004035% 99.995965% 84 0.003118% 99.996882% 85 0.002400% 99.997600% 86 0.001841% 99.998159% 87 0.001407% 99.998593% 88 0.001072% 99.998928% 89 0.000814% 99.999186% 90 0.000615% 99.999385% 91 0.000463% 99.999537% 92 0.000348% 99.999652% 93 0.000260% 99.999740% 94 0.000194% 99.999806% 95 0.000144% 99.999856% 96 0.000107% 99.999893% 97 0.000078% 99.999922% 98 0.000058% 99.999942% 99 0.000042% 99.999958% 100 0.000031% 99.999969%------------------ Wrong thinking is punished, right thinking is just as swiftly rewarded. Two of my ex roomates shared your birthday (March 11th). For the record, one stalked me and the other was the evilest bastard that I have ever met. Sorry. I am sure that you are quite nice though. Oh, on the topic of stalking…he would come into my room while I was sleeping (it would wake me up), stare at me, and sometimes touch himself. I told him to stop and started locking my door. He said he stopped but eventually I noticed that my door was unlocked in the morning and one time I heard him pick the lock to watch me. It was very creepy. I am so happy I don’t live there anymore.
HUGS!

For the record… anyone out there born March 4th, 1975 or just March 4th? It is my birthday and also the only day of the year that makes a sentence that does not include a numerical rank “march forth”.
HUGS!

Crackwise-- my sister and I (twins, so this whole topic is understandibly underwhelming to me) are exactly one year younger than you. Yay!
That’s kind of funny. The only person I ever met who was born on my birthday (same year as well–1975) was a crazy bitch. I posted the topic in hopes to find a decent person with my day. Side note: Everyone I’ve evr met with my same name has been a bitch, too. Jeez, maybe I am, too, and no one’s ever had the guts to tell me
You wanna hear something really freaky? My wife has the exact same birthdate as one of her brothers! Honest! Even weirder, they were born only a few minutes apart! Isn’t that crazy? What? They’re what? Twins? Oh. Never mind.
Actually, I shared the same birthday (12/28/58) as a girl I knew in high school. And my father’s birthday is the same day as his father’s (May 1). When our daughter was due, they gave the due date as May 3, and my father was urging us to have her on the first, so three generations in his family would share birthdays (albeit not successive generations). She was born on April 27, as it turned out.

May 6th (1962) here - Hey Melin, almost! Greetings to a fellow Taurean.
My best friend in High School was born on May 6th as well. (Obviously a good day to be born )
About ten years ago I went to this college/university student council conference in San Francisco. They housed us in the dorms (it was summer) and it just so happened that we had an odd number of people in our group and I ended up sharing a dorm room with a guy from some other college.
Anyway, we have this first meeting where about 200-300 people are in the room and then they told us to find a person with the same birthday as us. It was a madhouse with people running all over the place screaming out random dates - well, I guess it’s obvious now but the one person that shared my birthdate (Aug 10th) just so happened to be my roommate. Weird. There was also a girl who had Aug. 11th as a b-day who turned out to be a hell of a kisser, but that’s a different story.
Then, about 3 years back I was dating a ballerina in London for nearly 3 months before we realized we had the same birthday - you’d think it would come up more quickly than that, wouldn’t you? Freaked us both out actually - the randomness of it all.
Hey, SqrlCub, my dad’s birthday is on March 4.
Mine’s August 9. I’ve never met anyone else with my birthday, but I share the date with two historic events of dubious distinction: the bombing of Nagasaki and Richard Nixon’s resignation.
January 25, 1979. Never met anyone with the same date.
But 2 of my previous ex’s have the same birthday March 3, and 6 of my relationships have been with men who are Pisces, not a good match. oh well.

My wife’s brother was my best man while my sister was her matron of honor: they share a birthday. My sister later gave birth to my niece on my birthday. My mother shares a birthday with my mother-in-law (hard to forget that date). I also went to school with a guy who was born on the same day I was and later worked with a woman who shared the same birthday.

Actually, one of my best friends in college actually had twin siblings who were born on her fourth birthday. Three children in the family and all shared the same birthday (which also happened to be Valentine’s Day).
Yep. April 5th, 1978.
The more that I start thinking about this - I have another story to add.
I was dating this girl from Chicago and we went to London to visit a friend of mine. Well, wouldn’t you know, we got to talking and it turns out that my girlfriend’s birthday was the same as my Mom’s and my friends birthday was the same as my Dad’s. Sort of creepy actually.
Even if I had a signature, I doubt I’d have room for it.
April 21 here, 1985. Haven’t met anyone with the same date yet. Any takers?
Very nice, Purplebear, but you still beat me by 23 years.
