Anyone teach for Kaplan?

I’m doing an ‘audition’ later this week to teach an LSAT prep course. (I don’t know if they’ll actually write ‘beer money’ in the memo line of the checks, but…) Has anyone taught a prep course for them before? Which exam? Any suggestions?

I used to teach LSATs and SATs for them and do private tutouring (for them and on my own).

What type of suggestions are you looking for? My sister made better money teaching MCATs for them. I felt I made more money just doing private tutouring independently.

I was just trying to waste time before school, though.

Used to teach GRE/SAT for Princeton Review. What are they paying you at Kaplan? I don’t know how what the interview is for Kaplan but if you ever want to work for Princeton Review, I’ve got some great interview stories!

At Kaplan you do a 5 minute teaching presentation on any subject under the sun for the remainder of the audience.

I suggest using one of those pneumonics (at least I think that’s what they’re called), writing on the board and calling on people randomly. They’re looking for people who can implement the Kaplan program properly.

My SAT kids were the worst but sweet (just didn’t do their homework or put an effort in…mostly rich kids just satisfying their parents). The LSAT kids were older and more motivated, though not always. On the other hand, the LSAT kids were an uncomfortable step into a law school messageboard, obsessed with school rankings and wanting to know which schools I did and didn’t get into. One had the gall to ask if I felt I’d get a biglaw job based on the school I was attending.

mnemonics

Yup, that’s about right. See Ace, if they let a slack-jawed clown migrant like me teach I’m sure you’ll have no problem.

Thanks for the tips. (Sorry I kind of abandoned the thread. It’s been a crazy week.)

I did my audition, which was a how-to about constructing a Starbucks drink order. We broke it down to the elements, which all got written on the board, and went around the room having everyone pick an element (“Martha, iced or hot? Rosey, how many shots?” that sort of thing). No mnemonic, but the two Kaplan types in the room seemed pleased enough with how it went. (Thanks for suggesting the cold calls, by the way.)

There were about ten people who were auditioning, and we had a pretty good mix. One guy showed how to keep a scorecard in baseball, one woman did a sudoku puzzle, and so on.

I don’t relish the opportunity to teach pre-law students, but hey, beer money’s beer money. I did ask about retesting the SAT, since my scores are over five years old, but since I was the only LSAT applicant tonight and there were a ton of SAT applicants, I’m not sure how that’ll go over.

Thanks again.

I was a Kaplan SAT tutor for about 7 months. It was one of the most mindless jobs I ever had, and one day, somebody asked me what my worse job was and I realize that was it. However, the pay was decent, and in a way, you set your own hours. Also, the test strategies are genuinely helpful, I’ve found.

I imagine they’ll let you retest to tutor the SAT. If your center is anything like my center, they’ll need the extra tutor. Plus, you get bonus points for tutoring more than one test. Of course, I accumulated enough points to get a genuine bonus, and they never paid me.
