Anyone use Uber to move furniture?

I have only a bedframe, office table, office chair and clothing shelf rack to move today or tomorrow. Renting a truck like Penske (which is over $150 with insurance and mileage if one buys the most comprehensive coverage) seems like overkill and they are often grimy and dirty inside. The 4 items need to be moved 18 miles to a new apartment.

Anyone here ever tried using an Uber? It would have to be the biggest of Ubers, given the awkward angles of the table and chair. Any other options?

I have no friends or family who have suitable big cars.

Lugg..Uber for movers is listed online.

You can hire people to do this for you. There are ads for this on Craigslist.

Home Depot truck rental. I rented one to move a basketball goal that I got for free. Twenty something dollars for a 75 minute rental. I was actually three minutes late returning it and they didn’t charge me the extra $20 they could have.

Uber and Lyft drivers are going to be unlikely to be willing to serve as moving trucks; that’s not really what they are there for, and I’m not sure that you can specify “I need a driver with lots of cargo space” when you book a ride. If one of your items is a bedframe, even an Uber driver with an SUV probably won’t have enough room in their cargo space for it – you really need a truck.

Plus, you’d be needing extra time on both ends of the Uber ride, for loading and unloading, and I would imagine that the Uber driver would be charging you for that down-time; even if you could find a willing Uber driver, with a big enough vehicle, I’m not sure it’ll cost you much less than just renting a truck.

Seconding either a Home Depot truck rental, or Craigslist. If you’re concerned about “grimy” rental trucks, maybe cover your stuff with blankets or something.

$150 seems like a lot for a quick 18 mile rental with Penske. Similar rentals usually only cost me like $50. Do you absolutely need all the insurance? Maybe just cover their truck and your liability (if your insurance doesn’t already) and not the stuff inside?

Uhaul does similar rentals, but they’ve really gone downhill lately. My last few rentals with them have been terrible, and I finally switched to a local Penske place and never looked back.

Some places, like Enterprise, will also rent cargo mini vans.

Looking at Penske’s site, it looks like they rent on a daily basis; it doesn’t look like they price it for “i only need it for a couple of hours.” It’s telling me that their least-expensive trucks in my area are $60/day, plus $1.29/mile; for a 36-mile round trip, that winds up at $106, and doesn’t include any additional miles from the rental place to the OP’s house (and probably doesn’t include insurance, either).

Most bedframes come apart. They’re much easier to move that way.

I agree that you’re going to want somebody who’s expecting to move furniture, though.

This. Use Lugg or Dolly or another dedicated moving app. I don’t drive for Uber or Lyft, but I’d be pissed if I showed up expected to haul a bunch of items across town. That’s not what the app is for. Some luggage, okay. An office table and chair? No.

Yes. I used to use Dolly and it worked beautifully. Unfortunately my state decided they were violating state trucking regulations so now I just use NextDoor to find people.

Where I live (California), you can rent a U-Haul van or pickup for $60 or so all in (depending on gas used) for a whole day – that’s $29.95 plus insurance coverage, mileage and gas. They are usually clean, in my experience. This is assuming you don’t need help moving stuff, or can’t dragoon a friend into helping you.

This is exactly what thumbtack.com and taskrabbit.com are for.
