Anyone use Verizon DSL?

And if you do, do you know their policy on multiple machines? Will I be able to patch several boxes into the DSL router via a hub and get multiple routable IPs for no more money, or will I have to set up an IPmasq box?

The FAQs I found on the Verizon site are hopelessly lacking in useful information :frowning:

I use Verizon DSL.

You only get one IP adress, but you can share it with a router(not a hub). They will allow you to share it, but they won’t support it.

Also, they use PPPOE (point-to-point protocol over ethernet) to dynamically allocate a new IP address every new session. It can be a bit of a pain, but it’s much safer than a static IP. Best to get a router that supports PPPOE, so you don’t have to patch things together.

Good Luck.

This is a good router for this sort of thing. Plus it acts as a firewall. Shop around you should beable to find it for cheaper

PPPoE does not make anything safer that is just a lame excuse to feed you to make you put up with what a pain it is. The real reason that they use PPPoE is so that you cannot run a sever very easily. If IP address is dynamic you can’t you have to tell people what you address is over and over again…

Thanks for the replies. I’m well aware of the pain-in-the-arse-ness of PPPoE. I won’t bother investing in an actual router, though. I’ll just set up an old Linux machine with two NICs as a router/firewall/NAT gateway for the rest of the network.
