Well IOS 8.1 was released today which adds the Apple Pay functionality and is usable with iPhone 5s 6 , 6plus and the new iPads, basically anything with the thumb print scanner on the home button.
For those that don’t know, it uses the near field communications chip to be able to wirelessly communicate with NFC enable point of sale devices, and the finger print can be used to authorize web purchases.
You link a credit card ( I think all the major credit cards work with it) to your Apple Pay set up on the phone, and supposedly , off you go.
So I have set it up with a couple of CCs and will give it a whirl. Probably should have waited a few days to see if there are any major security leaks, but hey ho, new shiny stuff , whatchagonnado?
Any one tried it yet , any opinions? Comparisons to any Android or windows phone equivalents ?
(If we could avoid any Apple vs Android Vs Microsoft vs I don’t have a smart phone acrimony that would be wonderful)
To clarify, there’s two different Apple Pays. One allows you to perform one touch digital purchases and is available on the iPhone 5S+ and the latest iPads. The other allows you to make real would purchases using NFC on your phone and is only available on the 6 & 6+.
Ok, I just bought a candy bar at Whole Foods.
Apple pay is, as they say, slicker than owl shit!
The transaction was completed in less than half the time of a typical credit card payment.
One other thing- I wasn’t able to add my primary credit card, which is an Amazon rewards card. There’s a lot of bitching about this, so hopefully Amazon will extract their head from their posterior, and support it soon.
OK, tried it in the supermarket, didn’t work, but it turns out I was putting my finger on the little picture of the finger print on the screen, not on the home button thumb print sensor.
stupid brain
Once that brain fart had unflatulated itself , all worked well, I just held the phone to the card swipey NFC ready point of sale thingy, the passbook with the card came up, held finger on the home button, done and done.
I didn’t check to see if it would work with the phone in the locked state, or if I had to unlock first.
So pretty slick so far, and no one has run of with the remaining balance of my CC , so that’s good.
The guy in front of me was trying it, too - and he did the same thing as you!
When it didn’t work, I said “touch the home button,” and I could see him go “D’Oh!” mentally.
That was the first thing that I noticed as well, when looking at the pictures. (Apple Pay is not out yet in Canada, and I don’t have an iPhone 6x anyways.)
I just got it set up, using my Wells Fargo card as the paying card. Took awhile for WF to “verify” the card, but it finally came through.
Sprouts! Awesome. I’ll be trying either Whole Foods, Sprouts or Panera tomorrow. I was glad to read here about using the home button rather than that screen image of a fingerprint. I surely would have done it the wrong way first.
Still a bit unsure if I must unlock the phone first. I’ll try it unlocked first.
yep , works from a sleeping phone , been using it when I can, Fresh market, Wholefoods, haven’t tried it for gas, and unsurprisingly the Utah Sate Liquor stores don’t take it. Much easer than fetching the wallet out the pocket, particular as I bought a funky new wallet that is basically a few sheets of anodized aluminium held together with some o rings, looks nice and is compact, but not exactly functional.
I tried to set it up, but it requires you to have a stupid passcode. 95% of the time, my phone is sitting on my desk next to me, at home. I have no desire to have to type in a 4-digit code or stick my finger on it every time I want to look at it.
I’m hip to the idea that the pay thing requires some security, but I’m not going to use it until they change it so the passcode and/or fingerprint is only required when I’m using it to actually pay for things. Total nonstarter for me.
I’m deeply confused by this. Do you have your phone set to never blank the screen after a period of inactivity? My phone goes dark after a couple of minutes (to save battery), but I have it set to only actually require a passcode after about 15 minutes of inactivity. When I’m in that interim period, I at least have to press the home button and swipe to unlock, even if I don’t need to enter my passcode. With TouchID, you don’t even have to do that–just press the home button with a recognized finger (you do have to enter the passcode after a reboot, and also possibly once or twice a day under certain circumstances). The major selling point of TouchID is to make it so convenient to secure the phone that everyone will do it.
Under general set autolock to never, so your phone wont autolock after any period of time so you can see it all the time. Maybe a battery suck, but sounds like you have that set anyway .
You will still have under the touched & passcode a setting for ‘require passcode’ which I don’t think can be changed from immediately, but that’s just saying it always needs a passcode when ever it needs a passcode rather than having a passcode last for some period of time, if that makes sense.
Maybe I’ll retry the touch thing. I don’t have any weird settings set up with the autolock or anything like that; I just had the touch thing going for a while and really didn’t like it. Seemed slower than the grab-and-swipe. I also sometimes use a stylus or have gloves on or whatever. I tend to use my phone while cooking a lot, to listen to music or podcasts or whatever, and I can’t count on my hands being clean.
And it also just irks me that you can’t just set it to be on for payments. WTF not? Why do I have to lock down my whole damn phone just to use that one feature?
