Anyone with allergies have experience with "hypoallergenic cats?"

I have loved cats all my life and would love to get one eventually. Not in the cards right now, based on where I’m living. I’m not allergic myself, but my SO is–really likes them, just can’t be around them for very long without getting very stuffed up and sneeze-y.

It’s not an immediate concern, but when the time comes… :wink:

I’ve heard rumors that Siberian cats, Maine Coons, Russian Blues and Balinese (along with the two different varieties of Rexes, I believe) are all slightly-less allergy-inducing/hypoallergenic than most cats because of the change of the amounts of dander they produce, etc. Does anyone here have any real-life experience with how accurate these statements are?

Yes, I’m very allergic to most long-haired cats. A friend of ours has a Russian Blue. I’m only mildly reactive to it, and the cat seems to like my lap. With my daily dose of Claritin, I don’t seem to have any trouble. I do have trouble with most short-haired cats as well, but not as bad as with long-haired.

I’m not allergic, but a friend of mine with pretty severe pet allergies has a pair of Devon Rexes, and they’ve never given him (or our mutual friend with the same affliction) so much as a sniffle. Weird-looking little guys, and a bit expensive as I recall, but they’re very sweet kitties.

I have friends who have a hypoallergenic cat. I’m only a little bit sniffly in its presence.

There’s no way in hell Maine Coons would be ***less ***allergy-triggering. They have a LOT of fur, and a double coat.

I’m super allergic, but I’ve been okay with Devon Rexes in several households.

I also got allergy shots, which were life-changing.

What about Sphynx? My husband is terribly allergic but I love cats and would love to get one of those.

My SO is allergic but he seems to have acclimated or something to our cat. Whenever we visit other people with cats his allergies start acting up, but when he’s at home with our cat he’s fine.

I had a similar experience when I had to live in a home with two cats. The cats in the house were tolerable allergen-wise, but I was just as allergic to other cats.
