As I drive from Columbus, OH to Dallas next weekend, I’ll have part of the day on 18 December in Springfield, MO. I’ll be staying at a hotel by the airport. Is there anything in Springfield I should see or do? I will probably be there by mid-afternoon and have the night there. Any places to eat besides the usual chains?
quick bump…just in case any MO dopers see this.
I had an aunt who used to in Springfield, and I liked it the time I visited. Very green. I liked the fireflies. Don’t know what there is to do in that town though. I know it’s relatively close to Branson MO (like within a few hours) but it doesn’t look like you’d have time to pop over there. Wish I could be of more help, alas.
Branson is 45 minutes due south of Springfield on Highway 65. You might be able to catch a show if they are performing and country music is your thing. If you are into the outdoors at all, Springfield is the home of Bass Pro Shops. It is on Sunshine Street, I believe. A huge store with lots of interesting things to see.
Well, you could drive down to Branson that afternoon and catch a show that evening.
But, if you have any interest in outdoorsy stuff at all, and probably even if you don’t, let me recommend one thing: BASS PRO SHOPS
Don’t beleive for a minute that it’s just a sporting goods store – it’s a lifestyle store, and a thick slice of American culture, to boot.
I believe it would be impossible to stick your nose in there and come back out in anything less than an hour – and possibly the entire evening.
