Aol 9.0

I tried posting this earlier, but after waiting a few seconds, I got the dreaded “This page cannot be displayed” error. So, now, I try again.
If any of you are using Windows 98/98se and have AOL 9.0, do you notice, that while using AOL, you somewhat frequently get “You have reached you open window limit” errors? I don’t ever remember getting them until upgrading from AOL 8.0 to 9.0. My wife gets them on her computer too. Is it just us, or do you get them too?
Also, has anybody who’s gotten them, have you found any solution? (other than trying to shut down other programs or closing other windows :D)
Thanks.

Well you could always switch to something that isn’t AOL. I know this isn’t what you’re looking for, but you may discover it is what you wanted to find.

While this also isn’t the answer you want to hear, I’ve found the only way around it is to reboot :frowning:

I’m using Win 98 SE on a pretty fast P4 with 512MB RAM, and I get that message (as well as windows just disappearing when another one opens – talk about fun!) if I don’t reboot shortly before loading 9.0. It’s also why I’m back to 8.0 most of the time.

FTR, yes, AOL sucks, I have a real ISP, and I use AOL anyway because I like it. So there

**…you somewhat frequently get “You have reached you open window limit” errors? **

How many open windows are you referring to. I’ve only got a P3 w/ Windows2000, yet I rarely get that message. I can have several dozen open at a time.
Granted AOL has it’s limitations but MSN isn’t any better either, I’m currently running four different servers and I’m not really satisfied with any of them.

Why 4? My contract w/ AOL expires this month and there has got to be something better! Although, I haven’t seen it yet.

Joel How often do you discard/clear your temporary files? I’ve found that if you’ll (Access) and clear the temp. int. files and history regularly it helps. I’m not a PCGeek so I simply assume it keeps more RAM available.

I myself, would have no qualms about trying something new, but my wife has her web site on ftp space AOL is providing us, and doesn’t want to have to take it down, and put it back up on another company’s space.

Hmmmm, I wonder, can you have both 8.0 and 9.0 side by side? I have a couple of old 8.0 CD’s. I wonder if I could install 8.0 while keeping 9.0. That’s a thought.

Not that many. Sometimes I’ll get the error with only 3 or 4 windows open. Anyway, I’ll try cleaning my temp folders more regulary to see if that helps. Thanks.

I think I can suggest some ideas to help the OP, but saying you’re running “AOL 9.0” is just way too little information.

Are you talking about AOL’s browser only? Non-browser windows? What happens if you run another browser other than AOL’s (which you really, really should be doing anyway)? Does the limit apply to network app and non-network app windows?

Lots of key questions.

First question, I very rarely, if at all, use AOL’s browser. What I use is Avant Browser which is a very good browser.

Second question, it’s mostly related to E-mail (I use AOL’s mailbox and not any outside mail programs like Outlook), like when I try to open a new message, or reply to one after reading it, but I can also get the error message if I try to start a new program that’s not Internet related.

As suggested, it is possible to run multiple versions of AOL on the same machine (like 8.0 and 9.0). It is important to note, though, that your filing cabinet will not synchonize between the two – so if you use your pfc a lot, you really have to pick one version and stick with it. You could also hold out for the next version of AOL which is available in beta right now and should be out before long.

If it’s opening AOL email thats causing problems, you might also try AOL Communicator. It has an outlook style interface and is almost all ways a superior mail program that AOL’s built in (not that that is saying much).

A third option would be to run AOL’s diagnostic program (Computer Checkup) and see if it can figure out what’s wrong.

Win - 98 se boxes here in the house.

Wife has AOHell 7.0, 8.0, and 9.0 and can use anyone she wishes. I had 8.0 and 9.0 but pulled 9.0 for a different reason. I did not like the way it behaved when copying a long IM session into an email, big delay while it thought about it. ( checking for virus? ) I donno, could not get it to quit. Had a work around but it just pissed me off so I am trying different versions of 9.0 trying to find on like my wife’s that does not do dat. When trying to lift her version, I do not get a clean install so… I’m using different disks I find. She downloaded 9.0 way back and it is not find able to me yet? Anyone know of a old version site that might have an early 9.0 release on it?

We are on DSL and use other browsers but AOHell ( I’ve had an account since 96 ) is still the safest, fastest, easiest, and easiest to access while travelling with a laptop of any system out there. – only use it as an ISP when in motels on the road — I can afford to keep it and so I do. )

All the email problems and that others complain about have never happened to me. ( I do go through and reconfigure all the controls after each upgrade or change but I consider that just common sense.)

YMMV

I definitely have to reconfig something after practically every upgrade.
And with all the programs on my PC, it is constantly upgrading something. So, every few days I clean and check everything. Occasionally I’ll get an upgrade that just doesn’t perform well or I can’t get it straight. I usually just restore the system to the day before and update it later. I assumed this was fairly normal.

But then again, my first PC was an IBM 8" tape drive.

Like I said, I’m no GEEK, well not anymore anyway…
Hell, I still prefer the old dos version of word perfect, before Windows (for word processing anyway).

I’ve got at least four different active providers on this one computer and several versions of some of those with a few more installed but not active.

That might cause some problems, huh?
