AOL, Netscape, and IE

I am an AOL user (ok, it sucks… but I’m too lazy to change my service.) Anyway, I got an AOL 5.0 CD in the mail the other day and it advertises that it will load IE 5.0. Didn’t AOL buy Netscape? If so, what gives? Why allow the browser competition to not only put their software on the CD, but load it automatically?

Thanks,
Max

Yeah, AOL now owns Netscape. As I understand it, however, the agreement that AOL has/had with Microsoft to use IE as it’s integrated browser (which predates the Netscape acquisition) was still in effect when they were designing 5.0. And, AOL 5.0 is built on the code for AOL 4.0 - it isn’t a whole new program - so that would make it easier for the programmers to just keep the integrated IE code. My guess is that the next version of AOL will use Netscape’s Gecko engine, that Mozilla and Netscape 6.0 are built on. Gecko was designed with that in mind - that it could be easily integrated into other applications.
