Apocalypse Now floggin

In the movie Apocalypse Now, is that scene where the bull is flogged to death real?

Yes. Not a bull, but a carabao (aka water buffalo). Was filmed in Nueva Vizcaya Province in the Philippines, and was a staged re-enactment, as it were, of a traditional Ifugao canao (ritual feast at major occasions, esp. funerals, weddings…).

That would be canao with a tilde over the n, BTW. Surf scenes filmed at Baler Bay, the river scenes at the approach to Pangsanjan Falls, and other town scenes around Laguna Province.

Flogged? I thought the poor critter got chopped up.
