So I was hanging out in Berkeley when I saw a small pro-war protest (what they were doing after everything seems pretty said and done, I’ll never know). One person was holding up a sign with a peace sign, an equals sign, and a swastika.
Peace means Nazis?
I’m assuming that they arn’t arguing that Nazis are peaceful folk.
I guess, in the context of WWII, peace might have lead to more Nazis (but frankly, we’d be more concerned about Japan). I find it very very unlikely that the current peace movement will lead to an upsurge in Nazism. But then again, would the Nazis have existed without WWI? Or are they argueing that we should have just kept fighting WWI perpetually so there would be no Nazis? And what does this have to do with Iraq?
Sheesh! I don’t ever want to hear you guys complaining about “No blood for oil” again. This takes the cake.
Well, I guess their implication is that ipeace during WWII would have allowed the Nazis to stay in power, or something like that. Of course it is a completely wrong use of the “equal” symbol
I thought the Swastika was a symbol for Ganesha, the Hindu god who mediates between mankind and the divine. It could be considered to be a representation of a Christ-figure. Hence, there may be some equality between a peace sign and the Swastika.
Concerning the equals sign, I assume the protesters were not math students.
“The swastika is a sacred sign of prosperity and auspiciousness, perhaps the single most common emblem in earth cultures. As the Encyclopaedia Britannica explains, ‘It was a favorite symbol on ancient Mesopotamian coinage; it appeared in early Christian and Byzantine art (where it became known as the gammadion cross because its arms resemble the Greek letter gamma); and it occurred in South and Central America (among the Mayans) and in North America (principally among the Navajos). In India it continues to be the most widely used auspicious symbol of Hindus, Jainas and Buddhists.’”
(small point on my “church renovation” analogy - actually used, in a letter to the editor of my local paper. Yes, someone is that stupid, and they live right by me! :smack:)
There were just so many dope-smoking long haired hippies in the Nazi Party.
peace means peace, which is an abstract concept
nazis means the plural of nazis, and nazis aren’t abstract
So peace doesn’t equal nazis unless nazis are abstract or vice versa.
and peace can’t give a reason for wanting to be unabstract because it only exists in people’s heads and you can’t feel it, and no one wants that to happen to them(though maybe to others…) peace didn’t, isn’t and won’t mean nazis.
