I guess he should have thought [del]twice[/del]once before using the Secret Service budget to line his own pockets.. How is he going to spin this one, I wonder?
Mistaking a professional civil service for a conspiracy, as is his wont, I would presume “The Deep State wants me dead!”
I’m not sure it needs spinning.
According to your story, the head of the Secret Service says that they have enough money to protect Trump through September, and September 30 is when the fiscal year ends.
I’m not a government budget expert, but i infer from this that the Secret Service will, at the start of the new fiscal year, have a new fiscal year budget that will allow it to keep protecting the people it needs to protect.
The key issue, from this and other stories i’ve been reading about the Secret Service budget, is the issue of salary caps for individual Secret Service members. Once they run up against these caps, and cannot be paid anymore, they are effectively working for free. In the past, Congress has authorized overrides for those caps, and it might have to do so again.
Here are two more stories:
I can’t stand Trump, and there’s little doubt that his large, jet-setting family is costing the taxpayers more money than previous Presidents, and making the Secret Service’s job more difficult, but i’m not sure what you think Trump should say about this. And, to be quite frank, in the context of the whole federal budget, we’re talking about peanuts here.
Then again, the NEA budget is also peanuts, but a problem. The amount of money the federal government gives PP is peanuts, but a problem. We spend peanuts on a lot of things that people take issue with - Trump overcharging the Secret Service for golf cart rental at least feels justified.
Ironically, the national peanut subsidy has massively increased and runs into the billions.
Look, I know all that is correct. I do. But it’s his total hypocrisy that is just overwhelming. All the criticisms of Obama’s vacations. There are dozens and dozens of quotes from Trump about how Obama was frittering away money on Secret Service protection for him and his family when they travelled. And now Donny John has doubled down on that and depleted the funds far faster than any president before. With some/a lot/most of it going back into his own pockets through the Trump properties.
I blame President Carter.
“Mr. President, this is Paige from the typing pool.” She’s your entire security detail from now on. She’s not authorized to carry a firearm and is not expected to take a bullet.
Good luck."
Secret Service is part of the Treasury Dept
They print money.
No problem.
It’s not just that he’s blowing through all this money on personal luxury. It’s that much of it is going back into his pockets. It’s being paid to Trump entities.
This is what you get when you elect a grifter President.
I think I damaged my eyes during the eclipse, because I read the title as this:
Apparently Social Security has just enough funding to project Pez through Space
Which made me think of this:
I agree completely. In fact, i think that the biggest concern here is not how much is being spent, but where the money is going.
This is an issue that is much bigger than the Secret Service; it goes to the heart of Trump’s presidency, and a significant portion of the Republican Party have made pretty clear that these sorts of financial conflicts of interest are not really something they’re concerned about. A grifter president, supported by people with, we might charitably say, rather flexible ideas about ethics.
I know the Secret Service can’t go on strike, but I wonder what would happen if they did anyway. I mean it’s a non a military organization so the worst they can to agents refusing to work is just a firing, not being locked up in the brig.
They wish – they got moved to Homeland Insecurity when that Department got created (FWIW at least it reunited them with the Coast Guard which themselves had been taken out of Treasury around 1967).
I’m not sure why this wretched little crook has so many of his relatives under guard. I would have imagined say Carter would have maybe 8 around him at all times with his siblings etc. taking their own precautions.
Difficult to project a presidential relation being seized as hostage, even with direct family.
I’m sure there’s regulations concerning which family members get protection.
He’s got five kids plus spouses and eight grandkids. That’s sixteen right there. Maybe his ex-wives and spouses? Melania’s parents? Both of their siblings? Nephews/nieces?
The article says there are 42 protected here, and Obama had 31.
Only his wife and children under 21 need live with him. The rest can look after themselves — and are rich enough to hire personal bodyguards if they want it.
Plus when they visit him they will be as protected as anyone else in the White House or wherever purely since despite he being the SS’s priority, there’s a blanket effect to security.
No, it’s actually the Bureau of Printing and Engraving that prints the money.
Of course the reason this is in the news is because some agents have hit the statutory cap on overtime pay and the SS doesn’t have enough staff to assign others to the job. The cap incidentally is an artificial cap imposed by the congress, there is no inherent reason why it should exist at all. As I understand it, it is to keep civil servants from every earning more $ in a year than a congressman. Hurts their feelings or something.
What interests me is that it is supposed to be illegal for a civil servant to work for free-there are laws against it to prevent abuse. Perhaps that is the exception the Director is seeking.
The President isn’t involved in this except of course he travels a lot and travel for the President is very expensive and manpower intensive. He could solve this problem by staying in DC, but chooses not to. The number of people being protected is defined by the SS (I believe-I don’t think the President decides). And as for the SS paying Trump’s businesses, that is true and has been true for every President in recent times. When the President travels to property he owns, the SS pays rent for the space they use there. That has been going on for a long time.
The big problem is the extremely low morale in the SS. It ranks last among the various Gov’t agencies. Fixing that is going to be a long expensive process.
Melania & Barron didn’t live with him for the first 5 months or so of his Presidency and they still got full Secret Service protection.
