appeals court/ appealate court

Lately, I’ve been hearing the appealate court referred to , exclusively , as the appeals court. CNN , NPR, everybody!

Is this the right use of the word appeals?

An appellate court is a court of appeals. Some are called that (eg The New South Wales Court of Appeal), but some exercise both original and appellate jurisdiction (eg The Victorian Supreme Court). Calling the latter “the appeals court” when it is hearing an appeal seems like useful shorthand to me.
