'Appetite for Destruction' or 'Nevermind'?

Klosterman has an only-slightly apologetic love for hair, heavy and pop metal, and AfD (whatever metal category it falls into) is one of his absolute favorites. On the other hand he likes to take passing swipes at Nevermind and Nirvana whenever he can…I can’t recall if he uses the word overrated, but the intent is there. I thought of him in particular because I’d bet both fall into his top 5 album mentions.

I picked RUSH.

GnR was a hybrid of Aerosmith and 80’s Hairband, a departure from the corporate rock that was being digested on the radio at the time.

Nirvana was a sloppy unpolished garageband that kids could relate to, just pure angst and nothing more.

There was and still is plenty of room on the airwaves for diversity, but music is a business and they want to sell what they want to sell, to make the most money as possible, and don’t give a rats ass about what might actually be good.

The last popular tune I liked on the radio that was part of the music from the 80’s, was “You Oughta Know”, 1995.

I was there, I heard the change and I stopped listening to the radio because of the non diversity, and pure BULLSHIT they kept feeding the listeners.

It all became the era of “One Hit Wonders” from then on…not exclusively, but you know what I mean. :frowning:

(I should say I liked quite a few things including GnR and Nirvana, Bush, Pearl Jam, ect…but it took away the stuff I REALLY like)

Yeah, that’s definitely not true. They weren’t playing complicated stuff, but Cobain wrote a lot of very strong melodies and Grohl was a hell of a drummer.

I dunno about Metallica being pissed about Nirvana, but Billy Corgan is another matter. Cobain stole his girl AND his limelight.

P.S. Any more references to *Bush *and/or Alanis Morrisette and I will direct my vomit in the direction of the offenders.

I’m gonna vote for Nevermind, as it had far more of an impact, although I like both albums. (I was always more of a Pearl Jam fan though)
And Rush sucks.

Both of those albums are quintessential rock albums for their respective decades. I love both of them dearly, and have spun them more than the tires on my car.

I need to think on this one more, dayum.

Just an observation, but AfD was ahead by a couple votes going in to the weekend. As the weekend progressed, Nevermind took a solid lead, and Rush is making a respectable showing. It means, something, I’m just not sure what

Who do you think came out ahead in that exchange?

Dave Grohl.

I agree. If you think Nirvana were a “sloppy garage band,” then I’d love to hear what garage bands you’re listening to.

AfD was the album that sucked me into dirtier hard rock, swilling whiskey and smoking/toking, rather than wearing makeup and hairspray. I was smack dab in middle school, and it’s what finally got me to start buying music, and looking for more.

But Nevermind came when I graduated HS, and railroaded rock into a direction that took itself seriously, after the whole glam phase. They rebooted rock into something to take seriously and experiment with again, like we discovered during the 60s and 70s (basically, when the Beatles started using drugs) – I blame Disco.

So, Nevermind. Sorry, GnR.

I don’t this anyone outside of Shawn Fanning pissed Metallica off more than G&R.

Napster?

Jethro Tull ftw.
