Apple ditching 3.5mm headphone jack on iPhone 7

The iPhone 6s and 6s+ are both thicker and heavier than their predecessors due to the stupid force touch feature.

I suspect the pressure to get thinner, lighter and to reduce the bezel size are driving the need to remove the headphone jack as a reaction to the above.

Thanks for the correction, looking at Apple’s website I see the difference in thickness is .27 vs. .28 for the iPhone 6/6S and .28 vs. .29 for the 6+/6+S.

The weight difference is roughly a half an ounce and 3/4 an ounce between the 6/6S and 6+/6+S.

It is shocking that a mere mortal could even lift that thing, it is practically Thor’s hammer!

I’m not an iPhone user, but I’ve long transitioned to BT headphones and done away with pesky wires. The headphone jack pretty much just serves as a hole to collect dust in my devices, so I’m ready to move on.

My friend, however, likes both and had some valid reasons for keeping it. I feel for him, but not really.

I use headphones in one of 3 places.

With their proposed design, I’d need to carry a second pair of headphones just for my phone in addition to having one more thing to charge. Really, really stoopit.

At some point someone has to take the chance on changing the standard.

Incorrect. At some point the industry can get together and decide on and impose a new open standard.

The thing that makes the thickness argument so stupid is that they’re starting to make their phones bigger. I know a lot of people who got a 5 just because they didn’t a phone as bulky as the 6. And yet all the alternatives are even bigger.

If you’re about miniaturization, you can’t go around making your phones bigger. When it comes to space, the increase in length and width matter a whole lot more than thickness.

Apple has been pushing proprietary bullshit for a while. I do not for a moment buy the thinness argument. Apple’s business depends on that kind of first party control over what you do with their devices. There’s a reason you can’t even have a custom watch face on your superexpensive Apple Watch.

I’m perfectly fine with this. I rarely use the headphone jack. I use Jaybird bluetooth headphones and I love them with a passion.
