So, the iPhone 5 came out today, and it’s a big ‘meh’.
Some thoughts:
[ul]
[li]There’s already so much that smartphones can do (phone, music, web, email, calendar, gps, camera, games, etc) that there doesn’t seem to be too much left that manufacturers can add, so any future versions will never be as revolutionary as the first ones.[/li][li]One major thing left to add is a digital wallet[/li][li]Besides the digital wallet, the only things they can do are better screens, faster processors, etc, which are good, but not “wow”[/li][li]Apple’s secrecy is a bit of a joke these days, since most people already knew what the phone would look like, and most of its features, based on leaks. How much longer will they go on with this “secrecy”?[/li][/ul]
What are your reactions? Planning on buying one? Planning on switching from iOS to Android, or from Android to iOS?
I will buy one. I like how they just work. Apple does ‘intuitive interface’ better than anyone else. Plus, I have a pretty extensive Apple ecosystem at home now, so it’s what I like.
What would be a cell phone game changer for me? Battery life would be a big one, but that’s still just incremental. Maybe something with a flexible display or like a combo of Google glasses and an ear bud. But, that would make gaming a challenge. I guess I don’t know what could come along and change the game at this point.
I currently have an iPhone 4, which I got almost exactly a year ago, shortly before the 4S came out. When my upgrade comes around, I’ll probably upgrade to the 4S. I’m happy being one step behind the cutting edge.
I don’t have any plans to switch to Android, because the iPhone does everything I need it to and I don’t want to buy all the apps again. The only thing I hope to see is an improvement in processor speed and responsiveness, because recently I’ve noticed my phone lags and freezes momentarily quite a bit, even after I restart it. I think it might be because the memory is almost totally full.
People who followed the rumors already knew everything about the new iPhone. The announcement was redundant. The “new” “features” don’t especially impress either. This feels like a warmed-over version of the iPhone due about 2 years ago.
I don’t even update my iPhone 4s firmware on a timely basis. I just bumped up to the current OS as I like to keep my phone jailbrokenso I can do my winterboard look on it which I prefer.
When I went from 4 to 4S I noticed a big jump in speed, not as big as the 3G to 4 though.
I’m going to upgrade to the 5 and give my dad the 4S as his android phone is utterly crap, and not at all useable by a 72 year old, whereas he can use his iPad without any trouble.
I waited with much excited anticipation for the announcement last year, was 6 months out of contract with my 3Gs but wasn’t impressed with the 4, so I waited. I was so disappointed with the 4s that I went out and got a Galaxy S2 the next day. I haven’t regretted that decision for a second and was so happy to dump iTunes. I didn’t rule out the possibility of getting another iPhone, though, if the next one was a show stopper.
I’m sad to say my next phone will likely be another Samsung, I might wait to see what happens after the GS3. The iPhone 5 just looks like a stretched out 4 (which I never liked - it’s too “boxy” for my taste), the screen is too small now that I’m used to a 4.5 inch, and I’ve read the apps made for the 4s and before will not render larger on the new screen, but will be letterboxed. Silly. Since 4G capability and turn by turn maps directions are not these grand additions but are merely getting the Apple product up to speed with stuff that’s been around for a couple years already, it’s just not enough to get me back.
Not an Apple user, never owned any Apple product. But I don’t think I’d be thrilled by the fact that now all my old docks and peripherals won’t work.
Is the headphone jack on the bottom in addition to one on the top, or is it now the only one?
If these changes were necessary in the process of making the device thinner, was it really worth it? How much do purchasers of the new model need to spend replacing peripherals?
They will be selling an adapter for $20. If you’re patient, I am sure that monoprice will have them for $1.50 each in a few weeks. The phone will come with one USB->new_plug cable. The new cable isn’t just for size, although that is important, it’s also significantly faster at transferring data. It’s totally ridiculous to expect Apple to stick with a relatively slower and bulkier cable forever.
Yep I will get one as it will be on the new Telstra 4G network. Less congestion in the CBD and faster download speeds, the rest of the features are a meh with me.
I will be getting one. I preordered the 4 and love(d) it, and now I am out of contract and ready for a new phone, and no desire to switch. I also have owned Mac computers for 8+ years so the whole iTunes etc thing doesn’t bother me; I don’t get the hatred.
