I went to buy an iPod Mini the other day, and was irritated at how…wimpy the available colors were. Aside from a generic silver, there was baby-boy blue, baby-girl pink, and a bright, pastel green.
I ended up with the silver, but really - if they’re going to offer them in different colors, why not something more serious, like a bright red, deep orange, or navy blue? Everything but the silver looks ridiculous.
Granted, I’m rather conservative in my aesthetic preferences. But I can’t imagine how their sales figures aren’t heavily off-balance.
Anyone disagree? What color iPod Mini did you (or would you) buy?
When I was considering a Mini, I’d settled on the green. If my husband wanted to use it every now and again, I would have went for the silver for the reasons you mentioned. The colors are quite girly.
The Creative Zen Micro comes in different colors. It’s kind of hard to tell by the tiny picture, but it looks like purple, blue, silver, turquoise, yellow, orange, red, hot pink, white, and black.
I would want it in my favorite color, orange, which they don’t have.
I already have an iPod with a glow-in-the-dark orange iSkin, and yes, it is in fact the coolest thing on the planet. It’s really more glow-in-the-dim. If you have it outside in full sunlight, then bring it indoors, it emits an eerie, unnatural light. So far, this has not proved to have any practical benefits, because when you leave it in your backpack, and go looking for it the next day, it’s been in the dark for hours and is no longer glowing. But, still, it’s orange and glows in the dark.
Absolute, iSkin makes protectors for Minis, too, check the link. The colors are kinda dumb, but maybe you’ll like them a little better? I don’t know about Minis, but the screen (and chrome back) of my iPod got instantly scratched all to hell, so if y’alls get an iPod I strongly recommend that you take it out of the box and put it into an iSkin or some other kind of case immediately. iSkins give you easy access to all the ports, buttons, and whatnots, so you don’t have to take it out of the case to charge it or hook it up to you computer. [/shameless iSkin shilling]
I do not understand Apple at all. They make the iPod, ok, great. Comes in one color. Bright white. They make the mini, comes in a few colors. Logic would suggest the next generation of normal iPods would also ocme in colors…nope. Still only bright white. Why? There is no reason…NO REASON AT ALL to not offer the regular iPod in different colors, other than the big wig designers over at Apple going,
“The iPod is soooooo perfect in bright white, there is no need for other colors, because we know exactly what ew are doing by making it bright white.”
If you don’t mind paying extra (and, really, if you did, what are you doing buying Apple products ;)) you can Pimp your 'Pod out to pretty much any color you want over at ColorWare.
The two products have different demographic targets. The iPod is aimed at serious music buffs as well as users who need a large amount of portable storage space. The iPod mini is targeted, generally, at women and teenagers who don’t have huge-ass music collections. My guess is Apple’s market research determined that the type of person who would buy a full-size iPod wanted something with a minimalist design, while women and teenagers would want something that “popped” more.
Of course, not everyone fits neatly into those categories, which explains the proliferation of iPod cases with bold colors. My guess is that the silver Mini is for people who didn’t need the size of a regular iPod, but wanted something with minimal aesthetics.
Though I did like the black & red Limited Edition U2 model and a couple of iamthewalrus(:3='s ColorWare options catch my eye, my major beef w/iPod’s is with the display screen. How about different font options and scrolling fonts?
Im just coming in here to defend the mini iPod in pink, purely because I have one!
But yes I will agree the colours are a bit feminine - you didnt mention the yellow though, I thought that one was nice and doesnt come across as being too girly.
Never mind the colors. Why can the iPod, after HOW MANY generations, still not handle the “gap between tracks” problem? Listening to anything like a live soundtrack, classical music, rave/dance mixes, or “concept albums” like Dark Side of the Moon, results in an extremely annoying 1-2 second pause while the iPod reads the next track.
Seems to me all it needs is a little bit of memory buffer/lookahead and some additional logic (see this site for more-than-you-wanted-to-know about this issue).
The Rio Karma does it, so it’s certainly not an insoluble problem. Too bad I already have an iPod.
I wouldn’t care if the iPods only came in Lime Green and Hot Pink Zebra Stripes, I would upgrade in a heartbeat and just put a sleeve on it (which I already have).
Does your pod pause between songs? Because mine tends to run songs together, starting the next song before the first is quite over.
As for the colors I would have preferred a deep red or dark green, but the silver suits me well.
