Applesauce - how long does it keep in the fridge?

Bought a pint jar of applesauce last Tues. No sugar just apples and water. Ascorbic acid to keep it from turning brown. Opened it and had a few spoonfuls.

Looking on the internet some sources say it’s only good 3 days???

Is that correct??? Moms buy applesauce for babies all the time. Does it spoil that darn quick in opened jars? Do I already need to throw out nearly a whole jar?

Still Tasty gives it 7-10 days, which sounds about right. It’s got quite a bit of sugar, which makes it tasty for bacteria, but not so much sugar that it acts as a preservative (unlike, say, honey or syrup).

If you don’t think you’ll use it up in time, applesauce freezes well. I’d put it in single serve containers or small ziptop bags, so you can just take out what you need when you’re ready to eat it.

I better eat some today then and freeze the rest.

Can’t eat too much at a time or I get a tummy ache. A few spoonfuls once in awhile are so good.

Thanks

I have eaten it after a couple of weeks in the fridge. It wasn’t at peak flavor, but it didn’t make me sick.

Maybe a month, then it gets furry.

You can freeze it in an ice cube tray and then put the squares in a baggie to be measured out a little at a time.

This.

Good heavens. I had no idea.
I keep it until it’s moldy…which can be a pretty long time in my experience. I don’t eat a lot of it, though, just use it in cooking.
You might go for some of the individual sized packs sometime. I usually prefer to buy in bulk, but if you only use a bit at a time it’s cheaper than throwing out a jar.

I make my own applesauce fairly often. We eat it until there is visible mold, but typically finish it before that point.

Until it gets moldy and starts walking around in the fridge, starting fights with the other foods.
