I’ve been seeking work for a while now. I was told I need to dress up, even if applying for some food job. Also, someone said I need to get my hair cut. Its pretty long. Do employers really not hire long haired women? I can always pull it back in a ponytail.
Anything else I need to know when interviewing? Thanks.
You don’t have to dress up overly formal, I think for just going in and handing in an application at a store, a nice shirt, shoes and dark jeans are acceptable (or wear something that looks brand appropriate). For an interview though, I would always err on the side of caution and wear a nice dress and blazer or dress pants.
Not sure about the hair…as long as it’s well groomed and not obscenely long as to potentially be hazardous it should be all right. I guess you could wear it in a ponytail…as a fellow long haired lady I would hate to cut mine.
What sort of jobs?
As for the hair, employers like to be able to see your face. It should be styled so that your face is featured. That means pulled back or put up or some style that does not hide your face your face.
The ugliest person with a smile, is still prettier than the most beautiful person with a scowl
Apply in clothes befitting the job. If you are going to a sales job at Sears, what are the other clerks at Sears wearing. Dress a little better than that. You don’t want to over dress just a step up.
The thing is too many are unemployed. You’re not only selling yourself, but your also saying “Hire me INSTEAD of so and so.”
The key thing is you have to make the interviewer feel like he/she would WANT to work with you day in and day out. With so many people out of work, it’s probable that the final round of candidates will all be qualified skill wise, so it’s going to come down to likeablity.
Also make it known to the employer YOU WANT to work for THEM.
Make sure you have ready answers to key questions.
Can you work flexible hours? If not why and what can you work. Be ready.
Are you able to show up on time. This is VERY important. If you let it slip out you have kids, make sure you immediately follow up you have care for them and this will NEVER be an issue.
Assure them you have reliable transportation to and from work.
Again, let me say, people hire people they LIKE. You have to come across as likeable and as someone the interviewer would want to work with.
Unless your hair is a risk for getting caught in machinery or some other kind of safety hazard, it shouldn’t matter, especially for a woman. Make sure it’s clean and well-kept, but otherwise, don’t worry.
