Appropriateness of "indian head" gold piece

When I read that the US will be issuing a new gold piece, based on the old “buffalo nickel” design, my first thought was to wonder whether the indian head on the flip side was entirely appropriate.
My frame of reference was the NCAA’s recent ban of the U of I Illini, and I believe the Fighting Sioux from N. Dakota or somewhere.
I know the NCAA is a private organization, as opposed to the US Mint, but it struck me as a little odd that the 2 organizations would have such apparently different views as to the appropriateness of native American imagery.
Am I clearly missing something?

I think that it is totally appropriate. I think that anybody that controls the currency that I spend can put whomever they want on a coin. If some Indian tribe or Nubian or Arab or Tibetan puts a generic white person on their money, and it offends me, I will definitely not use their money, but I would be compelled to admit that it is entirely appropriate for them to put any image on it that they chose. I also believe that anybody that has a substantial problem with a picture on the currency needs a job or hobby that is productive and can occupy their mind in a constructive manner. (Except the Susan B. Now THAT was offensive.)
