I don’t think I’ve ever paid to have my brakes changed. I’m not a shade-tree mechanic by any stretch, but somehow brakes ended up in the category of oil and whatnot — something I could do myself.
But the Acura has ABS (never touched the system before), it’s cold outside, and I’m missing several needed tools. So it’s off to … Midas? Mineke? Egad I’ve heard dreadful things about their upsells. The dealer? Wherever, I’m curious if anyone has an idea of what it’ll run. Front and rear disks, and assuming rotors don’t need turning (though a ballpark on that would be interesting).
Thanks,
Rhythm
My Honda dealer charged me $190 last month for the back brakes only, they did not turn the rotors. So about $380 for both front and back. Non-dealer places will be cheaper in most cases. If you live in a place like LA or NYC it could be higher.
Last night I paid $250 (Midas) for pads and rotors for the rear brakes on a 2000 Acura, plus they lubricated . . . something or other that I don’t remember. Whatever it was, they said it was bone dry.
The front brake pads were still good after 95,000 miles.
Disc brakes are easy-on the front! On the rear, it all depends on what the parking brake mechanism is like-sometimes, you must removeand replace a pretty tough spring-unless you have the proper tools, it can be difficult. If you havethe “easy” type, you can replace both sides in about an hour. If you ae not having any otherproblems (like vibration, scored rotors), you can usually get away with just a pad replacement.
