Aquarium Canister Filters - what are the design challenges?

I’m just after spending three hours trying to re-start my aquarium filter. I just can’t comprehend why this is so difficult? It’s a simple water pump, sending water through a filter, and then back into the aquarium. This should have been mastered soon after electricity became widely available.

Nonetheless, a series of top-of-the-line filters, all of which claimed to be self-priming when I bought them, have proven to be incredibly stressful to re-start after cleaning. (The current one is an Eheim Pro 4+)

What are the engineering challenges causing this monthly frustration?

I used several different ones in an industrial design and they all seemed to work OK. They did have a bleed screw on top of the filter to let all the air out.

I had a similar Eheim canister for my tank. If you don’t want to prime it each time, shut of the valve all the way (like you’re going to pull the hoses out). If you do that, the water won’t drain out of it. At least that’s what I did when I’d clean the tank.

But if you’re having that much trouble, either you’re doing something wrong or it’s broken. Send them an email. I had a few problems with mine and they sent me out new parts without any trouble.
