Arcanum level cap lifter for Win 7?

So I downloaded a couple of games from GOG. Yes, yes, I am weak, but I am helpless in the face of being able to play Arcanum again. However, I need to raise the level cap from 50 to at least 100. And the only patches that I can find won’t work on Win 7.

Am I doomed to buying a new computer and installing Win XP on it? I’ve been trying to fiddle with the settings, telling my computer that this program worked JUST FINE with XP, but my computer is more stubborn than I am. And this isn’t the only program that Win 7 has a problem with.

Play Idiot Savant!

I haven’t used this patch, so a few questions:

  1. It doesn’t work because you tried it, because the program told you so, or because someone on the internet mentioned it? Or all three?

  2. Sounds like you tried compatibility mode?

  3. Is it something you have to patch once, or must it run constantly? If the former, it shouldn’t be hard to use a friend’s compute (or a SDMB person).

A Windows emulator might help, too.

I’ve done an idiot savant half ogre. Lots of fun, though I absolutely exasperated Virgil. Magnus wouldn’t join me, and told me kindly that he hoped that the gods would call me back to their bosoms, as it would be a kindness. Most people were actually fairly nice to my poor addled half ogre. Or at least they were nice when he was right in front of them, looming over him.

Anyway, I’ve tried running the patch, and I’ve checked it for compatibility. I’ve seen a few complaints from other people that the patch won’t work with Win 7.

I have to download and install the patch…and I’m not sure how I’d use a friend’s computer to do this. My husband DOES have a laptop with XP on it, but I’m pretty sure that he’s got at least one virus on it (we don’t use each other’s computers).

Depending on how many files there are this could be easy or hard: install on another computer and check the dates of every file. Run the patch, and see which dates have changed. Put these on a stick and transfer to your computer. Or, if it affects the save game only, copy those. Sorry, no current install to check on.

Just do the ancient gods sidequest. By the time your done you’ll be so ridiculously overpowered that you’ll able to defeat the final boss with a flick of your finger.

I’ll have to ask Bill for access to his computer. I need to do some virus scans on it, anyway, I’m pretty sure it’s infected. I was really, really hoping to get a Win 7 compatible patch.

I need the character points! She’s not nearly strong enough, I need to get her strength up, and powering up the character isn’t going to do a damn thing about letting her learn spells (or letting my tech character learn how to make Featherweight Chainmail). Plus my followers need to level up, as well. Magnus can’t make his fourth level items. And if I get a new character, for instance that Smith mage, he’ll never gain a level, and never learn any new spells.

I love Arcanum, but it really does need to have a higher level cap.

Doing the sidequest gives you all sorts of mad points

The sidequests do give various bonuses, I know, but the bonuses are revoked if you complete a circle and you just get the bonus for the completion.

The Sun Circle

  1. Ter’el Falcon’s Ache Li’tani (Elven trader, PE + 1, Bow + 1

(Hand) the place) Pick Locks + 1
  5. Kai’tan Gorgoth Pass Geode (Wheel Clan, BE + 1, CH + 1,

The All-Father

  1. Velorien Vendigroth Yourself (walk onto HP + 100,
    Ruins altar) FT + 100,

    DR + 30, MR + 30

So when you complete the Sun circle, for instance, you gain Halcyon’s blessing, but you lose the blessings of the other four gods.

And again, no matter how I get blessed, this isn’t going to level up my followers.

And Bill’s computer is dying or might be completely dead. So now I have NO way of DLing the patch and porting it to my computer. ::sulk::

But I bought Planescape:Torment at the same time. I’ve never played that one.

And yes, I DO have that document saved. Doesn’t everyone?

  1. Have you installed the patches? I hear there’s a pretty awesome fan patch out there, and I recall the High Quality Townmaps and High Resolution mods were pretty much necessary when I last played through it. (09?'10? Can’t recall.)

  2. Have you tried the Gamecopyworld patch/fix for 1.074 with the built-in level cap remover?

It’s the fan patch (Drog Black Tooth’s patch) that I’m trying to install, and which won’t work with Win 7. I’ll try the Gamecopyworld patch, thanks.
