Here in Wisconsin there was a large Grocery store chain named KOHLS.. This is the same Kohls company as the Kohls department stores, both started by the family of our useless U.S. Senator, Herb Kohl (a nice guy, but nothing more than that). I think over the years the food store was sold off to a different company as the department stores.
The department stores are thriving, ALL the gorcery stores closed this year.
Anyway, almost all of the KOHLS grocery stores were located in the same type of building, especially built for them.
It was an arched, dome like building.
I was just wondering if there was a name for this type of structure, and if anyone knew who the original designer was.
It’s an eliptical vault roof. Very common in the '50s and '60s. As for what they call the building, I’d guess they’d name it after the roof design, but I don’t know.
I always like those buildings, they’re huge inside. Hopefully who ever buys them up can make better use of the the incredible ceiling height better then Kohls or Office Max does.
That was a common style for grocery stores in the 1950s I don’t think it could be considered Googie, but the details (signs, lighting, etc) come close.
