Its not that 50% of men are swine, it’s just that those are the only guys women will date!

Seriously though, I think it’s WAY out of proportion. I think you’re number of 1 in ten thousand may ba a bit low, but it’s no WAY as high as 50%. Think about it. One guy can grope 50 women in a day no problem. If a guy gropes every female on a subway car, he’s inflating these apparent numbers, not to mention teh fact that the same guy probably gropes the same woman on multiple days. There are hundreds of guys out there who ride the subway NOT groping women, but it only takes 1 or 2 guys to grope most of the women on said subway.

Needs2Know:

Well, sex crimes in general are primarily male perpetrated. (female account for something like 3% of rapes, perhaps 10-15% of child molestations) though the numbers MIGHT be higher given judicial prejudices (paternalism)

Pack violence is also primarily male, given that males often seek to “outdo” each others. Given the taxonomy of crime, males are more likely to be “poachers” which means that they go out and get their victims…this lends itself better to pack violence.

Female violence is primarily of a “ambush” nature, which means they let their victims come to them, gain their victims’ intimacy or trust and then kill them. This dichotomy between male and female violence is pronounced both within crimes between people who know each other well (where females account for 50% of perpetrators) as well as serial murder (where females account for 10-15% perhaps higher once more given the paternalism)

But because females see violence as something to “ambush” victims with, this would not go well with a pack mentality which (as one might suspect) is far less subtle or tricky.

There’s a lot of interesting research on pack violence…usually suggesting that (actually in keeping with that school example) usually there are only a few true psychopaths who want to engage in the crime, the rest who are divided between 1.) those who engage in the violence enthusiastically as a means of “prooving” themselves to the leaders, but would not have initiated the violence themselves 2.) those who do not want to engage in violence but feel they will themselves be victimized if they do not, and are legitimately remorseful. I am not trying to rationalize anyone who engages in pack violence, but it IS a complicated phenomenon.

Oh to add one thing too that…females may be likely to engage in pack violence when:

1.) they are strongly involved in a “male” power-structured group. Female gangs for instance.

2.) Economic deprivation places families at risk. Females have often played front-line roles in historical “food” riots (French and Russian revolutions in particular)

My personal study group:

5 older brothers

2=swine
2=not swine
1=neither

Now keep in mind that these are pretty static numbers, but the players change. It seems that whenever one becomes decent, another falls into the swine catagory. The cycles can last up to years!!

So my answer is: 50% seems about right

Your brothers… did they hold you down and let a big glob or spit drip from their mouth toward your face and then suck it back up really quick? Or did they ever hold you down on the couch, sit on your head and pass gas? I didn’t have any brothers but I’ve had men brag to me about doing this kind of stuff to their siblings.

Needs2know…I would think having a brother for a sibling just might skew the results of the survey.

YES!!! They did BOTH of those things!!. They also:

  1. They gave “sleigh rides”. This was when they would hog-tie one of the girls (there are three of us), drag us through the snow, and beat on our bare feet with spatulas.

  2. They pelted us with water balloons form the roof of the house

  3. They MADE us test the ice thickness. If we didn’t fall through, the sent a heavier sibling.

  4. My one brother had a bizarre ritual of making us “Oh Mighty Salami” him. It’s hard to explain but suffice it to say, we didn’t like him as a babysitter.

  5. They would pin us down and “Chinese torture” us. This is, he beat on our chest with his finger tips- HARD!!

Keep in mind, mom had 8 kids in 10 years (all single births) and said she was unaware of any of this.

So apparenently this normal?

Needs2Know…it seems a reasonable hypothesis that pack violence mentality might have been responsible.

There also is some “diffusion of blame” that occurs with a pack.

Which article were you referring to? IT sounds interesting.

If 50% of men are swine, then 50% of women are sluts. At work, not to brag or anything BUT, half of the girls i work with have grabbed my ass. :smiley:
