I watched a Nova special a few months ago about HMOs. The CEO for an HMO had a good point when he said that managing care led to more efficient usage of medical funds, but the physicians had a point too when they said it led to rationing and only offering insurance to the healthy. However the program only talked about ‘for profit’ HMOs, as far as I could tell they didn’t criticize non-profit HMOs. Are the non-profit HMOs different than the for profit ones in regards to rationing of care, or was this just a verbal quirk of this particular documentary?
