Just because your wife does it all women are the same?
I wash my face once or twice a day. Hands - probably 10, I guess. I really don’t wash them every minute. In the morning, every time I go to the bathroom, then after dinner at night, and after I feed the gecko.
You blow your snot into a keenex and then proceed to walk around and touch everything in your house. Yuck. If you share your house with others, and they do the same, I bet you share the same colds over and over.
Also if I’ve been out, shopping or something, I have probably handled money, touched items handled by others (grocery cart handles, meat packaging, produce that have been sprayed by pesticides, or even canned goods stocked by a zit picking 15 year old) and so forth. I wash my hands, because since a lot of others don’t wash their hands, after blowing their nose I would rather not carry any viruses, germs, and just plain dirt into my home. Or even what if its rainy or muddy and the handle of my car door is dirty. If I just went for a walk I probably wouldn’t feel the need to wash my hands after I got home, but its pretty much a habit for me.
I’m not a germaphobe or even particularly tidy by any means but I do like my hands to be clean. Granted, the first month of nursing school indoctrinated me about this, and I have to do a yearly self learning package on handwashing and the chain of infection, but I get a lot fewer colds. flus etc than most and I credit proper handwashing.
You don’t wash your hands after you blow your nose? Yuck.
I’m a woman, with a very minimal beauty routine, and I wash my face however many times I shower in a day. Or more if my daughter gets a hold of my lipstick and goes on a face kissing spree.
Well, I guess I rarely blow my nose–if it’s one of those mucousy, I have a cold moments. Which is relatively rare nowadays. I guess I was thinking more of wiping at my nose.
And I mean, I wash after the bathroom, and on occasion I’ve used those antibacterial hand santizer things which probably do more harm than good. But it never occurs to me to wash my hands after going outside. I mean, there’s bacteria there, but there’s bacteria EVERYWHERE.
I also don’t wash my hands post sex/masturbation. Is that wrong?
Your wife is washing her face too much. I don’t wash my face every day unless I’m wearing makeup every day or it’s hot outside and I’m overly greasy. I’ve got combination skin that seems to do best if I wash it every other day in semi-warm weather, every day when it’s hot, and once every 3-5 days when it’s cold enough to frost or snow.
ETA:
It’s not wrong, but I’m pretty sure your hands may smell funny after masturbation if you’re not washing them. However, only people who have face-to-hand contact with you would notice.
Some women swear by one particular face-wash thing, like Noxema or Oil of Olay wash. Others rinse off under the shower with plain water. I’ve always used plain old soap (love Neutrogena) or a drop of whatever body wash I’m currently using, on a plain old washcloth. The stuff washes off, you rinse your face and it washes off, it doesn’t matter what you wash with, IMO. Once a week or so I’ll use a home-made moisturizer/sugar scrub, very very gently, to get rid of still oily flakes and patches. AFTER washing, while still damp, is the time to put on a good moisturizer. (My mom has always used Revlon Eterna cream and looks great, but I love L’Oreal.) And for me, that’s it. The beauty business is selling an awful lot of stuff to women that they feel they must have, preying on their insecurities about their looks and aging in general. (But there’s nothing wrong with that, maybe I would look better if I invested in a toner/moisturizer/cleansing line!) Women look in the mirror and see blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, wrinkles, dark circles, of course they want to get rid of imperfections, unlike men who don’t much care. There seems to be a product for each affliction, and the bathroom shelf can be pretty crowded.
I wash my face in the morning and at night, but sometimes I’ll get so sleepy that I’ll skip the ritual at night. I would have thought that washing any more than twice a day would strip the face of its natural oils and make it do nasty things to compensate: produce more oil, break out in zits, or wrinkle earlier.
How often are you sick? I don’t wash my hands after being outside, and the thought would never even occur to me unless I actually touched something gross/dirty. I ride the NYC subway everyday so who knows what kinds of germs or whatever are on there. And yet I never get sick or colds. Never. The last time I was sick was more than 10 years ago. Last year at one point everyone else in my apartment was sick and I never caught anything. Now I’m curious how many times I do wash my hands. I think it’s probably less than 5. I’ll count today. If they are dirty, I’ll wash them. People are so germophobic these days. It’s madness!
I usually wash my face 3 times a day if I wear makeup, twice if I don’t. It’s recommended to apply makeup to clean skin, and that works best for me. If I wore a full face of makeup all day, I probably want to wash it off when I get home. Then I wash my face again before bed. In the extremely unlikely event that I work out, I would wash my face again after that. That doesn’t sound so different from what she’s doing. Isn’t the shower wash the same as the before makeup wash? And washing off the makeup remover just makes sense. I don’t use that stuff, but makeup remover is awfully gunky to just use on its own without washing afterwards.
If it’s not causing her problems, it sounds normal to me for someone who usually wears a full face of makeup, which a lot of Doper women don’t.
Paraffin is a lot of things, but it’s also used in moisturiser. Just type “paraffin lotion” into google and see what pops up. You can also wiki “paraffin” to find all sorts of other uses. I’ve spent the last ten minutes reading it, rather interesting.
The lotions I use are Dermol and Doublebase, but they’re so heavy that only people with eczema, or other skin problems, should really use them. I will use them as a lotion and a soap substitute for when I actually wash my face with something other than water.
I suspect that this person is referring to paraffin wax. Candles are made out of it. It is also an excellent lubricant, and an ingredient in some beauty moisturizers. I believe this was an ingredient in the home-made skin cream they prepared in one episode of the tv series 1900 House.
Does she actually use all 20 bottles of stuff, or are some of them products that she’s tried and didn’t like, but hasn’t thrown out yet? How much does she spend on the stuff?
As others have said, the beauty industry has convinced many women that they need a whole lot of products to look good and “stay young.” It’s baloney.
Does she seem heavily influenced by the beauty and fashion industries in other ways or is it just the face washing?
Anyway, it sounds like she’s definitely over-washing, and her routine isn’t typical. If someone showers in the evening and washes their face as part of that, why would they wash it again before bed?
My mom is 67 and looks great. She claims that she never washes her face! She also doesn’t wear foundation very often, so I suppose the water rinse in the shower is sufficient. She has “normal” skin, so she doesn’t have to counteract any particular dryness or oiliness. (Obviously she washes it if it is particularly dirty.)
I need to do more than she does because I have somewhat oily skin and adult acne. I usually only wash it in the shower, so that’s once per day unless I take another shower later for some reason. I do use several products because of my particular skin type, but it’s only once per shower, or less often in the case of the scrub and the mud mask.
As for the hand washing, I was thinking 10 times is a lot until I actually thought about it. I wash my hands way more than that because of bathroom visits and food preparation. I always wash them when I get home because I always go to the bathroom immediately!
I wash my face in the morning and before going to bed. If in the shower, it gets washed with a washcloth and warm water; if not, it’s just warm water. I don’t use soap on my face at all. After a shower, I use a daily lotion for sensitive skin - my skin feels too tight and itchy without it (I’m borderline excemic - I have one little patch on my chin). I don’t wear makeup at all.
As a former medical lab tech, I wash my hands about the same as Mona Lisa Simpson. After seeing what everyone else is carrying around on their paws, I don’t want it on my hands, thank you very much. The first thing I do after coming in from shopping is wash with soap and water. I don’t wash after blowing my nose, but I should.
Not at all. I’m a scruffy dude and I probably wash my hands about that often. I wash 'em every time go to the bathroom, and I drink a lot of coffee, so I wee plenty. I wash them before I eat and usually after because I’m messy. I wash 'em after playing with the dog, 'cause that dude likes to roll in shit if he can get away with it.
I probably end up washing my hands way more then 10 times a day if I think about it and if I count stuff like showering and washing up after I’ve worked out.
I’m a woman and I wash my hands a few times per day (usually only after using the bathroom and if I’m going to eat with my fingers), my face before I go to sleep, and the rest of me once every couple days.
I feel like your wife doesn’t actually need to wash her face that many times. I think twice a day is the recommended amount, if that. I wash my face at MOST once a day, and sometimes not at all. I always wash it when I wear makeup, though.
